{"id":197690,"date":"2026-04-15T03:48:21","date_gmt":"2026-04-15T03:48:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/197690\/"},"modified":"2026-04-15T03:48:21","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T03:48:21","slug":"severe-weather-threatens-millions-from-midwest-to-new-york-this-week","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/197690\/","title":{"rendered":"Severe weather threatens millions from Midwest to New York this week"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Parts of the\u00a0Midwest\u00a0and the Plains are once again in the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/09\/us-news\/multi-day-severe-weather-threat-looks-to-bring-possible-tornadoes-to-texas-plains-over-weekend\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">bull\u2019s-eye of an expansive\u00a0severe weather<\/a>\u00a0threat that covers more than 130 million people from\u00a0Texas\u00a0to\u00a0New York. <\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s an increased risk of\u00a0tornadoes\u00a0Tuesday spanning a corridor from eastern\u00a0Iowa\u00a0into southern\u00a0Wisconsin\u00a0and northern\u00a0Illinois, which is under a Level 3 out of 5 risk of severe thunderstorms, according to the Storm Prediction Center (SPC).<\/p>\n<p>Strong EF-2 tornadoes are possible across a wider area Tuesday afternoon covering\u00a0Chicago,\u00a0Milwaukee\u00a0and\u00a0Des Moines, as well as parts of southern\u00a0Michigan, including\u00a0Detroit, which were added to the threat area Tuesday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, parts of the Southern Plains from Central\u00a0Oklahoma, including\u00a0Oklahoma City, to portions of North Texas including\u00a0Wichita Falls, are also under a tornado and large hail risk where a dryline \u2014 the boundary between dry air from the west and warm, moist air from the Gulf \u2014 is forecast to set up Tuesday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>This all comes after severe storms on Monday dropped damaging tornadoes and hail across\u00a0Minnesota, Wisconsin and\u00a0Kansas.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/13\/us-news\/severe-storms-submerge-texas-in-feet-of-water-with-widespread-flash-flooding-reported\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">second round of severe\u00a0thunderstorms\u00a0will ignite from Texas to New York<\/a> on Wednesday, with the\u00a0flood\u00a0threat mounting for parts of the Midwest and\u00a0Great Lakes, which have seen several consecutive days of heavy rain.<\/p>\n<p>The severe weather threats seen in the Midwest, Plaines and Northeast on Tuesday. FOX Weather<\/p>\n<p>Power outages remained across Miami, Franklin and Linn counties in eastern Kansas early Tuesday after tornado-warned storms blasted across the region Monday night.<\/p>\n<p>A tornado injured 2 people and destroyed homes and businesses after ripping through part of Hillsdale, Kansas, shortly after 8 p.m. local time on Monday, the Miami County Sheriff\u2019s Office said. <\/p>\n<p>Several RVs and campers were also overturned and roads to the community have been closed as police remain on scene to guard unsecured homes and buildings.<\/p>\n<p>A local school is serving as a shelter for those displaced.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A tornado seen in Ottawa, Kansas on April 13, 2026. @JenkinsCar53854 via Spectee<\/p>\n<p>Severe weather also damaged buildings in\u00a0Ottawa, Kansas, but no injuries have been reported, city officials said.<\/p>\n<p>Severe thunderstorms produced several tornadoes across parts of Minnesota Monday, including one spotted by\u00a0FOX Weather Meteorologist Haley Meier\u00a0during live storm coverage outside of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxweather.com\/local-weather\/minnesota\/truman\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Tr<\/a>uman, Minnesota. FOX Weather<\/p>\n<p>A warm front will be re-established across this Level 3 threat area and will amplify storms that cross this boundary. These storms are expected to produce large hail, 2-3 inches in diameter, particularly north of where that front sets up beginning mid-to-late afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Conditions will be ripe for supercell thunderstorms capable of producing strong EF-3+ tornadoes along or south of the warm front around sunset.<\/p>\n<p>In the southern theater of Tuesday\u2019s threat, severe storms capable of producing large hail and possibly tornadoes are expected to fire along the dryline which is forecast to set up over\u00a0Oklahoma\u00a0and West Texas.<\/p>\n<p>The tornado forecast in the Midwest on Tuesday. FOX Weather<\/p>\n<p>Storms that produced damaging hail across the Midwest on Monday tracked into Upstate New York late Tuesday morning and will reach New England later in the afternoon and evening.<\/p>\n<p>A Level 2 severe storm threat includes Burlington, Vermont, Albany, New York, and Scranton, Pennsylvania, with damaging wind gusts being the main hazard with the potential for isolated tornadoes.<\/p>\n<p>Wednesday: Third round of storms for Central US; potential for flash flooding<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, storms are expected to shift toward the\u00a0Mississippi\u00a0River Valleys, with the possibility for damaging wind gusts, hail and tornadoes primarily across a corridor that includes the Plains, the Midwest, the Great Lakes and the Ohio Valley.<\/p>\n<p>A map of the jet stream entering the Plains states.
