There is no denying that Queen Elizabeth II<\/a> was a fashion icon throughout her lifetime, with her 1950s fit-and-flare frocks setting trends and her colorblock coats becoming instantly-recognizable style symbols. The bold-colored coats and hats of Queen Elizabeth<\/a>\u2019s later years were the work of Angela Kelly<\/a>, Queen Elizabeth\u2019s personal assistant, dresser<\/a>, and confidante. For over 30 years, Angela Kelly was the late Queen\u2019s right-hand woman, helping her with a later-in-life style shift that included a somewhat risqu\u00e9 fashion choice.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe other thing that Angela [Kelly]<\/a> did for The Queen was she raised her hemlines,\u201d journalist Paula Froelich told podcast listeners on an episode of The Afterparty<\/a>. \u201cBefore her, The Queen’s hemlines had been almost all the way to the ground,\u201d referring to the late Queen\u2019s lengthy hemline styles of the 1980s and 1990s. \u201cAngela apparently is the one that looked at her and said, \u2018You’ve got great legs. Let’s show them off.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Froelich, Angela Kelly\u2019s designs raised the hemlines \u201cup, just below the knee,\u201d joking that the late Queen preferred \u201cCatholic school girl length.\u201d This subtle shift in design \u201cgave her a little bit more style\u201d as The Queen<\/a> entered her later years. Angela Kelly confirmed that the style update was her idea in a recent interview with Vanity Fair<\/a>. \u201cNeedless to say the hems on the clothes were raised,\u201d Kelly joked.<\/p>\n

Angela Kelly spent 34 years as the late Queen\u2019s closest confidante, spending nearly every day with the monarch. \u201cFittings were fun,\u201d Kelly reminisced with journalist Katie Nicholl. Kelly was responsible for a heavy portion of The Queen\u2019s fashion<\/a> and styling, although Queen Elizabeth had an invested interest in her clothes, too. \u201cThe Queen loved seeing the clothes being made from the beginning to the end,\u201d Kelly shared. \u201cThough she was not fashion-led, she still knew she had to look the part.\u201d<\/p>\n
