It\u2019s a tiny space that fills up fast \u2014 there are only 30 seats, and it\u2019s mostly walk-ins. (Some <a href=\"https:\/\/resy.com\/cities\/new-york-ny\/venues\/penny\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">reservations<\/a> are available two weeks ahead of time at 9 a.m.). If you\u2019re willing to stand, you can prop up at the standing rails along the window overlooking the sidewalk.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph n2hx75i _1knl15h1 _1knl15h0 cej01i1\">Penny works as an elegant yet slightly kitschy seafood and wine counter. Behind the bar, look for a fish statue among the huge ice buckets and a collection of small toys. The marble bar counter is lined with adorable purple enamel lamps. The menu is all about elegant raw and cooked seafood, paired with wines from a thorough list.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph n2hx75i _1knl15h1 _1knl15h0 cej01i1\">Trust the staffers for recommendations. I enjoyed a mineral glass of Rioja blanco from winery Alegre Valganon. With the trout, I had a delightfully bubbly red wine, the Bukkuram sole d\u2019agosto from Marco De Bartoli.<\/p>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph n2hx75i _1knl15h1 _1knl15h0 cej01i1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/penny_newyork\/p\/C_lFtWgRzax\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Penny martini<\/a> ($19) is made with barley shochu, sake, and dry vermouth.
