{"id":198686,"date":"2026-04-15T22:51:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-15T22:51:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/198686\/"},"modified":"2026-04-15T22:51:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-15T22:51:07","slug":"ny-islanders-solicit-funds-for-nypd-sergeant-erik-duran-convicted-of-manslaughter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/198686\/","title":{"rendered":"NY Islanders solicit funds for NYPD Sergeant Erik Duran convicted of manslaughter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>During their final game of the season Tuesday night, the Islanders shared\u00a0an NYPD union&#8217;s message on their scoreboard asking\u00a0fans\u00a0to donate to the legal defense fund of a sergeant convicted of manslaughter for throwing a cooler and killing a fleeing suspect on a motorized scooter.<\/p>\n<p>The Islanders displayed\u00a0a QR code on the UBS Arena scoreboard allowing fans to donate to the NYPD Sergeants Benevolent Association\u2019s defense fund for former NYPD Sgt. Erik Duran. The team also said it would donate a portion of its 50\/50 raffle to the SBA.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Support New York\u2019s Sergeants Benevolent Association in its fight for justice for NYPD Sgt. Erik Duran,&#8221; \u00a0it said on the scoreboard.<\/p>\n<p>The Islanders have supported a variety of causes and charities at games and in the community,\u00a0through the team&#8217;s\u00a0Hockey with a Heart program. <\/p>\n<p>The team declined to comment on the scoreboard message.<\/p>\n<p>SBA president\u00a0Vincent Vallelong\u00a0said the Islanders offered to connect with the police union to support Duran by donating about 25% of the 50\/50 raffle proceeds.\u00a0He said following Duran&#8217;s conviction, the union can no longer provide legal services\u00a0but can set up a fund for others to\u00a0contribute to help defray expenses.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Islanders called and wanted to set up something and give up a certain amount of the proceeds from the game,&#8221; Vallelong said. &#8220;The place went crazy when that was announced.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"weblink weblink_weblink__ycfeM\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsday.com\/sports\/hockey\/islanders\/island-ice-podcast\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p>recommendedIsland Ice Ep. 241: End of season, start of something?<\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Duran, 38, was <a class=\"nd-link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.newsday.com\/news\/nation\/new-york-police-cooler-throwing-death-sentencing-s87072\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sentenced last week<\/a> to 3 to 9 years\u00a0in prison for the 2023 death of Eric Duprey, 30, who tried to flee on a scooter after police said he was\u00a0selling drugs to an undercover officer in the Bronx.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors with the state attorney general\u2019s office showed surveillance footage during a bench trial in front of Judge Guy Mitchell that depicted Duprey driving the\u00a0scooter toward a group of people when Duran, who was in plain clothes, picked up a cooler full of drinks\u00a0and threw it at Duprey, striking him.<\/p>\n<p>Duprey\u00a0died after crashing his scooter into a tree.<\/p>\n<p>The judge\u00a0rejected Duran&#8217;s\u00a0defense that he did not have time to warn other officers and bystanders as Dupree approached on the scooter. The judge found Duran guilty of second-degree manslaughter in February. He was sentenced to prison last week.<\/p>\n<p>Attorney General Letitia James\u2019 office had sought between 5 and 15 years in prison. Duran\u00a0was taken into custody and his attorney is seeking bail.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I never wanted this to happen,&#8221; Duran told Duprey&#8217;s family before the sentencing.<\/p>\n<p>The SBA said the union is\u00a0partnering with the National Police Defense Foundation to support Duran\u2019s appeal and to solicit donations.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Let\u2019s show the nation that law enforcement officers support one another, especially when our justice system fails them,&#8221; the SBA said on its fundraising page.<\/p>\n<p>Islanders co-owner Jon Ledecky was seen in the New York Post\u00a0posing with the SBA president holding a copy of the\u00a0newspaper with a headline about Duran reading:\u00a0&#8220;Jailed For Doing His Job.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Long Island civil rights attorney Frederick K. Brewington said Duran\u00a0and other police officers who commit misconduct should be held accountable for their\u00a0actions.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This was not a police officer doing his job,&#8221; Brewington said. &#8220;Using a level of violence and excessive force is well beyond doing his job. This does\u00a0a disservice to all police officers who would not have done that and taken that life.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Brewington said\u00a0an Islanders game was not an appropriate venue to promote the legal defense fund. He said the Islanders should do more to address social justice causes in the community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If the Islanders want to engage in the public debate of taking this life, they need to stop playing hockey and run for office,&#8221; Brewington said.\u00a0&#8220;They\u00a0need to engage in societal concerns that impact all communities.\u00a0They need to address\u00a0what\u2019s going on in society to talk about what creates a set of circumstances that makes our society better.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Newsday&#8217;s Anthony M.
