The Big Apple straphanger initially believed to have been stabbed<\/a> on board a moving subway this week was actually shot \u2013 and the violence stemmed from a heated fight between strangers, cops and sources said Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The victim, 27, was shot in his stomach on board a southbound No. 4 train passing through Wall Street in downtown Manhattan at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, police said.<\/p>\n

He was treated at the scene before being rushed to Bellevue Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries that investigators initially believed stemmed from a stabbing, police said.<\/p>\n

But doctors apparently found the round as they performed surgery on the victim, according to law enforcement sources.<\/p>\n

Their findings confirmed the victim\u2019s cries as he stumbled out of the Wall Street subway station, according to a witness who saw him outside the famed Trinity Church.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere was blood around his mouth and nose and he stopped here and he said he got shot,\u201d said Orin Davidson, a tour bus hawker, who called 911. \u201cHe told me he got shot.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cHe said, \u2018I got shot\u2019 and then he collapsed,\u201d said Davidson, adding that the victim had \u201cblood around his mouth and nose.\u201d<\/p>\n

The masked perp \u2013 who was believed to be a teen with a dark complexion and dreadlocks \u2013 fled when the train pulled into the Wall Street station, according to law enforcement sources.<\/p>\n

He had not been caught by Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Cops initially said an attempted robbery fueled the violence, but cops said Wednesday that the suspect did not rob the victim, or try to do so.\u00a0<\/p>\n
