{"id":199056,"date":"2026-04-16T08:58:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-16T08:58:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/199056\/"},"modified":"2026-04-16T08:58:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-16T08:58:11","slug":"e-scooter-battery-blaze-in-leonia-may-spark-battery-storage-crackdown","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/199056\/","title":{"rendered":"E-scooter battery blaze in Leonia may spark battery-storage crackdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"VFJJD6TY45HTVLLQLUMBAL5CQ4\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/p\/1KC7RPvY9f\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/share\/p\/1KC7RPvY9f\/\">A fire caused by an electric scooter<\/a> has prompted officials in Leonia to consider the safety of storing these devices in apartment buildings. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7XXB3IHYVRHVDGOQPACSTDGTAA\">On March 22, Leonia volunteer firefighters responded to 313 Woodland Place, where an e-scooter battery caught fire in a public hallway, producing \u201cthick, acrid, dark smoke\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1TBolbUKvlZt_iFnxGHm-U3Crr4vc0uMx\/view\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/1TBolbUKvlZt_iFnxGHm-U3Crr4vc0uMx\/view\">before bursting into flames<\/a>, according to Leonia Mayor Bill Ziegler.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"2VJYSEUK7JFKZOTYSX2QAX4SII\">Firefighters quickly put out the fire and evacuated the building. No one was harmed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7JWWGCJLW5EETBGLN6SNP3YKLQ\">\u201cMy concern is, in a multiple dwelling unit, that one person\u2019s decision to put an e-scooter and e-bike in their unit or outside in the hall can affect everybody else in the building, as we saw in Leonia,\u201d said Ziegler. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"E4EGUL4ZLNE5VHRZGFOHXKPUF4\">The specific concern is not with e-scooters themselves, but with any lithium-ion battery-powered devices. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"HGD3LCYS2NELVH6I6MD22IAAVI\">A lithium-ion battery fire can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.evfiresafe.com\/ev-fire-what-is-thermal-runaway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.evfiresafe.com\/ev-fire-what-is-thermal-runaway\">reignite long after it has been extinguished<\/a>, because heat can continue to spread through the battery\u2019s cells.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"XJJN3AA6L5D2TFVWHNLQHYMHNA\">Leonia\u2019s laws and ordinances committee is now examining the appropriate storage of lithium-ion battery-powered devices in apartment buildings and is expected to present recommendations to the borough sometime this summer. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"UVCPKAAOZFGCBMOMQSRBOKU6HY\">Ziegler emphasized that a new regulation would not affect single-family homeowners. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"ODOEGZHU75FZ5BN4HCVHNFITZY\">Leonia isn\u2019t the only town to regulate lithium-ion batteries to reduce fires. <\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"7UAPKBAF6BFHTOPUTBOPF22FJQ\">In August 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/ecode360.com\/HA0454\/laws\/LF2445881.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Hackensack banned the sale of secondhand lithium-ion batteries<\/a>, and imposed regulations specificying where lithium-ion battery powered devices, such as e-scooters and e-bikes, can be stored.<\/p>\n<p class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\" id=\"GJ6LKWBZPZHQNJKBRA6BBOKHRU\">\u201cPlease avoid storing these items indoors, near sleeping areas and exits or near buildings if stored outside,\u201d the Leonia Fire Department stated in a Facebook post on April 7. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A fire caused by an electric scooter has prompted officials in Leonia to consider the safety of storing&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":199057,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[38],"tags":[128,9,24,63,129,131,130],"class_list":["post-199056","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-the-bronx","tag-bronx","tag-new-york","tag-new-york-city","tag-nyc","tag-the-bronx","tag-the-bronx-headlines","tag-the-bronx-news"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/199056","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=199056"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/199056\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/199057"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=199056"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=199056"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=199056"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
