NEW YORK (WABC) — New York transit officials head to federal court Thursday, escalating their fight with the federal government over tens of millions of dollars in funding for the Second Avenue Subway project<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is suing for $60 million in federal funds it says were improperly withheld from the long-delayed expansion into East Harlem. Oral arguments are scheduled for 1:30 p.m. in Washington.<\/p>\n

Despite the legal battle, the MTA says construction is moving forward on the next phase of the project, which would extend the Q line from 96th Street to 125th Street and Lexington Avenue, including a new stop at 106th Street.<\/p>\n

The lawsuit comes after transit officials warned the White House in February that legal action would follow if the funding was not released.<\/p>\n

The East Harlem expansion is expected to be completed by 2032 and is part of a broader project estimated to cost billions, with a significant portion funded by the federal government.<\/p>\n

MTA officials say work will continue as the case moves through the courts.<\/p>\n
