The seventh-inning\u00a0stretch then made its way to ballparks across the big leagues, and eventually around the world<\/p>\n
It\u2019s no different for Manhattan University baseball head coach Steve Rosen. \u201cI just kind of go about my business like most people do in the seventh-inning stretch, not really knowing that there is even a backstory to it.\u201d<\/p>\n
That story takes us back to the late 1880s in New York City.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Brother Jasper did, who was the athletic director at Manhattan College, now known as Manhattan University.\u00a0<\/p>\n
At the time, it was mandatory for all students who attended the college to go to the games.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cThere were various levels of interest about baseball from students who were required to be there,\u201d Brother Daniel Gardner, who now works at Manhattan University, said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
On one hot day in June of 1882 during a game against the New York Metropolitans at the Polo Grounds, Brother Jasper noticed the fans were starting to get especially restless.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cAnd so he took a timeout in the game, and made everyone stand up and stretch,\u201d said Brother Dan.\u00a0<\/p>\n
And it just happened to be the\u00a0seventh inning.<\/p>\n
It also just so happened to work, so Brother Jasper kept it going.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Over the years, Manhattan also played exhibition games against the National League\u2019s New York Giants.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The story goes, the Giants saw Manhattan fans stretching in the\u00a0seventh inning and liked it so much they adopted the tradition for themselves.\u00a0<\/p>\n
From there, it made its way to ballparks across the big leagues, and eventually around the world.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt became a great marketing commercial tool as well, because here’s where they could sell concessions,\u201d said Brother Dan. \u201cPeople would be walking around, there’d be a break, and so for them, it became a great opportunity for profit.\u201d<\/p>\n
Though others tell a different story.<\/p>\n
Another version claims President William Howard Taft was throwing out the first pitch at Opening Day in 1910, and in the\u00a0seventh inning he got up to stretch his legs. The crowd thought he was leaving, so they, too, stood up out of respect.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, we love President William Taft, he was great, but history is history,\u201d said Brother Dan. \u201cBrother Jasper was in 1882, so Brother Jasper’s got this one.\u201d<\/p>\n
Today\u2019s Jaspers wear the local lore with pride.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cOn away trips, they’re like, \u2018What’s a Jasper?\u2019 And I say, \u2018It\u2019s not what, it’s who,\u2019\u201d Jaspers first baseman Trevor Hansen said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
They make sure others know the tale, too.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cEven if I\u2019m at a Yankees game, I aways tell whoever I\u2019m with, \u2018Yeah, my school created that,\u2019\u201d said Jaspers outfielder Jeremy Sosa.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cBecause you don’t really think about how things start like that,\u201d Jaspers catcher Hunter Sute added.\u00a0<\/p>\n
That pride is shared by their head coach who recognizes the history his team stands on.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cEvery day we’re out here trying to honor those who came before us and particularly Brother Jasper who got the whole thing started for us,\u201d said Rosen.\u00a0<\/p>\n
