The next-highest increase among studied localities was in Chicago (up 56.2%) followed by New York City (up 54.7%).

Elsewhere in the Mid-Atlantic, Baltimore saw a 32.5% increase in property crimes. Data for D.C. and other localities in the D.C. area does not appear to be included.

The study, which analyzed FBI-reported monthly crime rates, included “only cities with sufficient data.”

Vivint’s research did not include 2025 data “due to incomplete and provisional reporting.” If it did, it might have shown a slightly different picture in Arlington.

Last year overall property crime declined by 14.9%, dropping from 8,649 in 2024 to 7,362 in 2025, Arlington County Police Department spokesperson Ashley Savage told ARLnow. Larceny/theft offenses declined 14.4%, while offenses involving burglary or breaking and entering declined 6.7%.

Overall crime, she added, declined by 10.9% from 2024 to 2025.

Savage also pointed out that at least some of what looks like a rise in crime might be due to a change in how some crime is reported to police.

“During the pandemic [ACPD] expanded the use of online reporting which covers many property crimes,” she said. “The convenience of online reporting for late, not-in-progress property crimes likely led to a better reporting of these incidents to police. Online reporting represented approximately 42% of total reports taken in 2025.”

During the period observed by Vivint, Arlington also showed the largest jumps in larceny (64%) and burglary (44%) rates, along with a 39% increase in the rate of motor vehicle thefts.

The study found that Arlington’s average property crime rate in the summertime was about 152 per 100,000 — well below Chicago at 249 and on par with New York City at 151.

Vivint’s numbers are not entirely aligned with ACPD data, which showed a property crime increase of approximately 55% during the same time period.

So far this year, Arlington County continues to see a declining property crime rate, according to county data.

A total of 1,646 instances of property crime were reported in Arlington during the first quarter of 2026. On pace for 6,584 total property crime reports, that would be a drop of roughly 11% from 2025.

Arlington’s surge in property crime during and after the pandemic was the highest in the country by one…

[8
303,9,12,56,63,65,64,104,797
0":"post-200298","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-new-york-city","8":"tag-crime","9":"tag-new-york","10":"tag-news","11":"tag-ny","12":"tag-nyc","13":"tag-nyc-headlines","14":"tag-nyc-news","15":"tag-police","16":"tag-theft
["GET
