President Donald Trump has criticized New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani over the recently proposed NYC tax. It is a change from the relatively cooperative tone Trump showed during earlier White House meetings<\/a>, whilst Mamdani still maintains the same.<\/p>\n

Zohran Mamdani and Governor Kathy Hochul revealed a new NYC tax targeting second homes worth more than $5 million. The proposal aims to generate $500 million and help address a projected $5.4 billion budget deficit.<\/p>\n

Donald Trump criticized the same on Truth Social<\/a>, writing, \u201cSadly, Mayor Mamdani is DESTROYING New York! It has no chance! The United States of America should not contribute to its failure.\u201d He doubled down on his criticism of the NYC tax, adding, \u201cIt will only get WORSE. The TAX, TAX, TAX Policies are SO WRONG. People are fleeing. They must change their ways, AND FAST. History has proven, THIS \u2018STUFF\u2019 JUST DOESN\u2019T WORK.\u201d<\/p>\n

However, Mamdani\u2019s plan is part of a broader effort to deal with what he described as a \u201cgenerational fiscal crisis.\u201d He said the tax focuses on ultra-wealthy property owners and is \u201cworthy of celebration\u201d given the city\u2019s financial challenges. Hochul supported the policy, stating, \u201cIf you can afford a $5 million second home that sits empty most of the year, you can afford to contribute like every other New Yorker\u201d (via The Hill<\/a>).<\/p>\n

Now, Trump\u2019s change in stance is further noted as on the same day of the Truth Social post, Mamdani insisted the working relationship<\/a> still functions beneath the public noise. He confirmed on CBS<\/a> Mornings that he and the president remain in contact. \u201cThere is one place of agreement that we have, which is that we both love New York City,\u201d Mamdani said.<\/p>\n

He described the dynamic as a classic New York story where two people with wildly different views can still find common ground. Trump hasn\u2019t yet commented on this.<\/p>\n
