Nearly four years after her death<\/a>, Queen Elizabeth<\/a> remains one of the most commercially celebrated figures in the world, and the 100th anniversary of her birth on April 21 has prompted an especially wide range of tributes<\/a>, from a landmark fashion exhibition at Buckingham Palace<\/a> to a limited-edition mohair teddy bear.<\/p>\n

To mark the 100th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth\u2019s birth this month, German toy company Steiff has released a limited-edition mohair bear in her likeness, the first time the 146-year-old company has produced a stuffed toy modeled completely after a royal.<\/p>\n

The teddy bear\u2019s look is primarily based on Queen Elizabeth\u2019s outfit at the Royal Windsor Cup in 2021.<\/p>\n

The 12-inch tall teddy bear, designed in collaboration with curated collectible retailer Galerista, depicts the late queen in a lime green Stewart Parvin crepe coat and matching Rachel Trevor Morgan hat, a pearl necklace, and a handmade crystal replica of the Vanguard Rose brooch\u2014a diamond floral piece that then-Princess Elizabeth received in 1944 at age 18 when she launched HMS Vanguard. The brooch was chosen in part for its personal significance: Elizabeth wore it to her first public engagement as monarch but rarely afterward, making it one of her more meaningful and lesser-seen pieces.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is how we all remember her,\u201d Nicolas Metz, managing director at Galerista, told The Daily Express<\/a>. \u201cThe bright colorful monochrome outfit with a matching hat, the pearls, brooch, and handbag.\u201d The only significant departure from her signature look is the bear\u2019s pearly white handbag; the Queen typically carried black, so this was a deliberate design choice Metz described as \u201cmore cheerful.\u201d<\/p>\n

Just 4,996 bears were produced worldwide, a figure reflecting that Elizabeth lived to 96. The bear retails for \u00a3289 ($360), and comes with a certificate of authenticity. The bears went on sale in Germany on April 4, and 200 had already sold within days of release. They do not appear to be sold online<\/a> internationally, but Metz told the Daily Express he expects the remaining stock to sell out within Germany within four to six weeks. He also anticipates the bears will appreciate in value significantly as collector\u2019s items over time.<\/p>\n

Steiff plans to follow the Queen\u2019s bear with a corgi collectible\u2014a nod to her beloved dogs<\/a> throughout her life\u2014and a Prince Philip bear, with potential future editions modeled after King Charles and the Prince and Princess of Wales.<\/p>\n

The bear is one of dozens of tributes to Queen Elizabeth coming out this month. Buckingham Palace announced that members of the royal family will attend several events on April 20 and 21 in her honor. The centerpiece of the commemorative programming is a landmark fashion exhibition at Buckingham Palace’s King’s Gallery. \u201cQueen Elizabeth II: Her Life in Style,\u201d which opened April 10, is billed as the largest display of her fashion ever mounted, featuring approximately 200 items spanning all 10 decades of her life, half of which are on public view for the first time.<\/p>\n

The Royal Collection Trust has also released a range of homeware\u2014tea cups, saucers, plates, pillboxes, tea towels, and spoons\u2014in colors drawn from the embroidery thread used by couturier Norman Hartnell for the Queen\u2019s coronation dress, including sky blue, foxglove pink, daffodil yellow, and leaf green. Several British brands\u2014including Burberry, Launer London, Floris, and Fulton Umbrellas\u2014have released commemorative items as well, ranging from a perfume inspired by the queen to silk scarfs and gold-plated pins with corgis<\/a>.<\/p>\n
