BRONX – A Bronx<\/a> grandfather was shot and killed<\/a> on Thursday after he was hit by a stray bullet. On Friday, the community mourned a beloved member.<\/p>\n Grandfather shot and killed <\/p>\n What we know:<\/p>\n Edgar Spence, 78, was sitting on a bench near his home in the Mott Haven section of the Bronx, when he was shot shortly before 10 p.m. Thursday.<\/p>\n According to police, Spence was an innocent bystander, hit by a stray bullet.<\/p>\n Spence died before paramedics could get him to a hospital.<\/p>\n SUGGESTED: NYPD investigating string of knifepoint robberies in Queens<\/a><\/p>\n Community mourns “Pops” <\/p>\n What they’re saying:<\/p>\n On Friday evening, the community gathered to mourn the man they called “Pops,” holding a balloon release, turning the bench he was sitting on when he was shot into a memorial.<\/p>\n “He was Pops. He loved everyone,” one neighbor told FOX 5 NY. “He was always very respectful. He was kind. He babysat my daughter. I love this man. This that happened was really senseless.”<\/p>\n Another neighbor referred to Pops as “Everyone’s grandpa. If he was on the way to the store, [he’d ask] \u2018Does anybody need anything?\u2019 You could catch him out here anytime by himself. He’ll just tell you about life, give you advice.”<\/p>\n Police seek info on shooter <\/p>\n What you can do:<\/p>\n The NYPD is investigating the shooting.
