City Deems Fort Greene Manse Unworthy of Protection as Demo Looks Imminent<\/a><\/p>\n

A last ditch attempt by the public to save the butter yellow Italianate manse on Fort Greene\u2019s South Oxford Street through landmarking appears futile.<\/p>\n

The city\u2019s Landmarks Preservation Commission has determined, for a second time in its history, that the eye-catching wood frame house at 158 South Oxford Street<\/a> does not meet the criteria for landmark status due to what the commission says are extensive alterations.<\/p>\n

Green-Wood Cemetery Opens Long-Awaited Visitor Center<\/a><\/p>\n

Since the late 19th century, the Victorian glass-and-copper greenhouse has been a jewel on the corner of 5th Avenue and 25th Street in Greenwood Heights, known for its eye-catching onion dome and iconic mesh signage. But by the 2010s, the future of the deteriorating structure \u2014 with its frame failing, window panes missing, and plants long gone \u2014 seemed less than secure.<\/p>\n

Towering Bjarke Ingels-Designed Gowanus Complex Preps for Foundation Work<\/a><\/p>\n

Nearly unchanged for more than a decade, a prominent but long inactive site in Gowanus is moving forward after a change of owners and plans. The new design by starchitect Bjarke Ingels Group, or BIG, for a much bigger and taller building will dramatically change the corner of 3rd Avenue and 3rd Street, rising steeply at the edge of the sidewalk across from Whole Foods and obscuring the landmarked canal-side Powerhouse Arts.<\/p>\n
