{"id":202311,"date":"2026-04-19T02:19:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-19T02:19:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/202311\/"},"modified":"2026-04-19T02:19:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-19T02:19:11","slug":"softball-allows-one-run-over-14-innings-in-saturday-sweep-of-merrimack","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/202311\/","title":{"rendered":"Softball Allows One Run Over 14 Innings In Saturday Sweep Of Merrimack"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>                    &#13;<br \/>\n                        &#13;<br \/>\n &#13;<\/p>\n<p>NORTH ANDOVER, Mass.\u00a0\u2013 The Manhattan Jaspers\u00a0softball\u00a0team (12-28, 7-11\u00a0MAAC), backed by strong starting pitching,\u00a0won both of its contests against the Warriors from Merrimack (8-24, 6-13\u00a0MAAC),\u00a0by the final scores\u00a0of 2-1\u00a0and 2-0\u00a0at Martone-Mejail Field\u00a0on Saturday afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>GAME ONE: Manhattan 2, Merrimack\u00a01\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\tDefense set the tone to begin the day, as no hits were allowed through the middle of the second inning by either side.\u00a0&#13;<br \/>\n\tIn the bottom of the second frame, the Warriors loaded the bases with two outs following a single and two walks, but an immediate groundout\u00a0was forced by starter <a href=\"https:\/\/gojaspers.com\/sports\/softball\/roster\/karissa-spring\/10649\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"10649\" target=\"_blank\">Karissa Spring<\/a> to thwart\u00a0that initial momentum.\u00a0&#13;<br \/>\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/gojaspers.com\/sports\/softball\/roster\/isabella-coulman\/12549\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"12549\" target=\"_blank\">Isabella Coulman<\/a> served as the first baserunner for the Jaspers after reaching on an error, and despite reaching scoring position, the score remained deadlocked at 0 after three.\u00a0&#13;<br \/>\n\tTo start the fourth, <a href=\"https:\/\/gojaspers.com\/sports\/softball\/roster\/samantha-kelly\/12542\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"12542\" target=\"_blank\">Samantha Kelly<\/a> sent a ball over the left field fence for the second time this season, striking first to put Manhattan on the board.\u00a0&#13;<br \/>\n\tBats stayed quiet for the next two innings outside of a Angelina Gencarlli double in the fifth.\u00a0&#13;<br \/>\n\tWith one out in the top of the sixth, <a href=\"https:\/\/gojaspers.com\/sports\/softball\/roster\/kaitlyn-moody\/12544\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"12544\" target=\"_blank\">Kaitlyn Moody<\/a> grounded out to second base which was enough to score Kelly, who reached third following a <a href=\"https:\/\/gojaspers.com\/sports\/softball\/roster\/natalye-debus\/12538\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"12538\" target=\"_blank\">Natalye DeBus<\/a> double.\u00a0&#13;<br \/>\n\tWith only two outs to spare in the bottom of the seventh, Merrimack knocked an RBI double to left field to cut the Green and White lead in half.\u00a0&#13;<br \/>\n\tDespite a runner later reaching third with two outs, a popup to third base ended the matinee in favor of the visitors.\u00a0&#13;<\/p>\n<p>GAME TWO: Manhattan 2, Merrimack 0<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\tTwo singles from <a href=\"https:\/\/gojaspers.com\/sports\/softball\/roster\/brianna-estevez\/12529\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"12529\" target=\"_blank\">Brianna Estevez<\/a> and DeBus loaded the bases right away in the top of the first.\u00a0&#13;<br \/>\n\tMoody took the sacrifice fly to right field to score Estevez and put the Jaspers on top early.\u00a0&#13;<br \/>\n\tMerrimack put two runners in scoring position across the first two innings, but starter DeBus kept the shutout alive, highlighted by two consecutive putouts to end the second.\u00a0&#13;<br \/>\n\tOffense stayed quiet through the third, fourth, and fifth frames, with DeBus retiring all but one of the Warriors she faced.\u00a0&#13;<br \/>\n\tIn the top of the sixth, Moody reached on an error following an error in the outfield. Pinch runner <a href=\"https:\/\/gojaspers.com\/sports\/softball\/roster\/madison-douglass\/12528\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"12528\" target=\"_blank\">Madison Douglass<\/a> at second base was gunned down at home on the same play to keep the score at 1-0 in favor of the Green and White.\u00a0&#13;<br \/>\n\tThe Warriors put runners on first and second with only one out in the bottom of the sixth, but a 5-3 double play kept the slim winning margin in tact.\u00a0&#13;<br \/>\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/gojaspers.com\/sports\/softball\/roster\/sophia-hannappel\/12541\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"12541\" target=\"_blank\">Sophia Hannappel<\/a> doubled with one out in the top of the seventh, with <a href=\"https:\/\/gojaspers.com\/sports\/softball\/roster\/adriana-giomi\/12540\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"12540\" target=\"_blank\">Adriana Giomi<\/a> coming in as a pinch runner immediately after.\u00a0&#13;<br \/>\n\tWith two outs, Estevez singled up the middle to give the Jaspers a needed insurance run headed into the final half inning.&#13;<br \/>\n\tEven with allowing a walk with one out, DeBus put down the Warriors in quick fashion, with a consecutive strikeout and groundout to end the nightcap.\u00a0&#13;<\/p>\n<p>STATS AND NOTES<\/p>\n<p>&#13;<br \/>\n\tFreshman catcher <a href=\"https:\/\/gojaspers.com\/sports\/softball\/roster\/kaitlyn-moody\/12544\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"12544\" target=\"_blank\">Kaitlyn Moody<\/a> led the Jaspers with two RBI on the day, logging one in each game.\u00a0&#13;<br \/>\n\tSophomore and Freshman utility players <a href=\"https:\/\/gojaspers.com\/sports\/softball\/roster\/brianna-estevez\/12529\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"12529\" target=\"_blank\">Brianna Estevez<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/gojaspers.com\/sports\/softball\/roster\/natalye-debus\/12538\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"12538\" target=\"_blank\">Natalye DeBus<\/a> each tallied three hits on the afternoon, with Estevez&#8217;s all coming in game two.\u00a0&#13;<br \/>\n\tFreshman shortstop <a href=\"https:\/\/gojaspers.com\/sports\/softball\/roster\/samantha-kelly\/12542\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"12542\" target=\"_blank\">Samantha Kelly<\/a> recorded the lone home run for either side on the day, her second of the season.\u00a0&#13;<br \/>\n\tJunior pitcher <a href=\"https:\/\/gojaspers.com\/sports\/softball\/roster\/karissa-spring\/10649\" rel=\"smarttag nofollow noopener\" rev=\"10649\" target=\"_blank\">Karissa Spring<\/a> and Freshman utility player DeBus each went seven innings for a win, their fifth and sixth respectively.
