FOX 32 Chicago\/YouTube<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39132324\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/AdobeStock_553583510.jpeg\" alt=\"Johnson called on Chicagoans to &quot;challenge city council not to do stuff like take wages away from Black and Brown people,&quot;\" class=\"wp-image-39132324\"  \/>Johnson called on Chicagoans to \u201cchallenge city council not to do stuff like take wages away from Black and Brown people,\u201d New Africa \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>Restaurant owners and associations have pushed back on the city\u2019s phaseout of the subminimum wage, saying it will shrink their already tight profit margins.<\/p>\n<p>Chicago\u2019s City Council failed to meet the 34-vote requirement to overturn the phaseout.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson\u2019s comments came in response to a question from a person who claimed that <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/29\/us-news\/chicago-mayor-brandon-johnson-renews-reparations-push-despite-150m-budget-deficit\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Johnson\u2019s Reparations Task Force<\/a> was not in compliance with\u00a0Illinois state law, which mandates that all public bodies hold public meetings.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson denied the assertion that his task force, which he launched in June 2024, was not being transparent with the public.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a black man in America calling for the reparations of black people,\u201d Johnson said. \u201cThere is no hiding or escaping that.
