ISLAMABAD \u2014 President Trump\u2019s Middle East envoy is headed to Pakistan this week to restart negotiations to end the Iran War<\/a>, the commander-in-chief told The Post Sunday.<\/p>\n

\u201cSteve\u2019s going to be going there tomorrow night,\u201d Trump said in a phone call from the White House, confirming that Special Envoy Steve Witkoff will land in Islamabad on Monday night ahead of a second round of peace talks.<\/p>\n

The president added that Jared Kushner \u2014 his son-in-law and a veteran of past Middle East dealmaking \u2014 will also be involved with the talks scheduled for Tuesday.<\/p>\n

Vice President JD Vance, who led a previous round of talks, will not make the trip \u2014 though officials still said he was leading the negotiations.<\/p>\n

When told that officials from Qatar were spotted in Islamabad hoping to receive him should he come to Pakistan\u2019s capital city, Trump didn\u2019t sound surprised \u2014 and left the door open to coming to Islamabad if an agreement is reached.<\/p>\n

\u201cI would say maybe at a little bit later date. We have to see how it works out tomorrow,\u201d he said.
Pressed on whether he could show up in Pakistan, Trump made clear he\u2019s not getting ahead of the process \u2014 reiterating that he would \u201cprobably come at a later date.\u201d<\/p>\n

The call ended abruptly as the president said he had military brass waiting outside \u2014 a reminder of the stakes surrounding the talks.<\/p>\n

Trump\u00a0had\u00a0celebrated what he claimed was a breakthrough on Friday,\u00a0proclaiming that<\/a> the\u00a0\u201cCOMPLETELY OPEN AND READY FOR BUSINESS AND FULL PASSAGE\u201d and that the US will obtain all the \u201cnuclear dust\u201d in Iran.\u00a0<\/p>\n

At the same time, he said\u00a0that\u00a0the US blockade on Iranian ports would remain in effect\u00a0for the time being\u00a0while the two sides\u00a0worked on finalizing\u00a0peace efforts.<\/p>\n

Notably, Iran\u2019s Foreign Minister\u00a0Abbas Araghchi\u00a0had\u00a0publicly claimed that the Strait of Hormuz<\/a>,\u00a0where over a fifth of the world\u2019s seaborne oil supplies flow through\u00a0annually, was \u201ccompletely opened\u201d for commercial\u00a0vessels.<\/p>\n

But later that day,\u00a0Iran\u2019s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf denied Trump\u2019s\u00a0characterizations\u00a0of\u00a0where things stood.\u00a0Then on Saturday, Iran opened fire on multiple vessels as they tried to pass through the critical oil chokepoint.\u00a0<\/p>\n

That illustrated\u00a0how the Islamic Republic\u2019s leadership\u00a0doesn\u2019t appear to be on the same page\u00a0during the regime\u2019s negotiations with the US.<\/p>\n

That wasn\u2019t nice, was it?\u201d Trump\u00a0mused on\u00a0Truth Social<\/a>\u00a0Sunday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re helping us without knowing, and they are the ones\u00a0that\u00a0lose with the closed\u00a0passage,\u00a0$500 Million Dollars a day!\u201d Trump added of Iran. \u201cThe United States loses nothing. In fact, many Ships are headed, right now, to the U.S., Texas, Louisiana, and Alaska, to load up, compliments of the IRGC, always wanting to be \u2018the tough guy!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cNO MORE MR. NICE GUY,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

The most recent high-profile round of talks involving senior US officials on the ground in Pakistan\u00a0was led by Vance, and they\u00a0concluded on April 11\u00a0after\u00a021-hour\u00a0marathon meetings\u00a0in Islamabad without a\u00a0deal.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Previously, Trump\u00a0indicated to The Post<\/a>\u00a0that he was unhappy about reports that his negotiators pushed Iran to pause\u00a0enrichment of uranium\u00a0for just two decades.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve been saying they can\u2019t have nuclear weapons,\u201d he said, \u201cso I don\u2019t like the 20 years.\u201d<\/p>\n

Top Trump administration officials, such as US Ambassador to the United Nations Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright, publicly claimed Sunday that Vance would\u00a0be leading\u00a0the negotiations in Pakistan. However, Trump\u00a0has\u00a0told reporters that Vance won\u2019t be in Pakistan, telling\u00a0ABC News<\/a>, \u201cIt\u2019s only because of security.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Post contacted Vance\u2019s office for clarification about the\u00a0veep\u2019s\u00a0role in the upcoming talks.<\/p>\n

The current two-week cease-fire between the US and Iran<\/a> is set to end on Wednesday unless\u00a0either of the two sides\u00a0decides to\u00a0re-up\u00a0it. Trump has publicly suggested that an extension likely won\u2019t be necessary and\u00a0has remained\u00a0optimistic about the prospects of\u00a0getting\u00a0a peace\u00a0deal done.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt will\u00a0happen. One way or another. The\u00a0nice way or the hard way.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0going to happen,\u201d Trump told ABC News\u2019 Jonathan Karl\u00a0about\u00a0the chances of\u00a0getting\u00a0a peace deal with\u00a0Iran done.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p>\n

The president told Fox News\u2019 Trey Yingst that if Iran doesn\u2019t \u201csign this deal, the whole country is going to get blown up.\u201d <\/p>\n

Trump re-upped his threat to target bridges and energy infrastructure if Iran fails to agree to a deal, a threat he has repeatedly hung over the Islamic Republic for weeks.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In particular, Trump wants to require Iran to hand over the remands of its nuclear program<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The president has made clear that his top priority is in negotiations.\u00a0Trump has reportedly contemplated a risky military operation to\u00a0take\u00a0the nuclear material by force.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In the meantime, he has warned that the US is monitoring Iran\u2019s nuclear sites via satellite.
