ALBANY, New York (WWNY) – New York Governor Kathy Hochul has announced a new plan she\u2019d like adopted for this year\u2019s state budget, putting more limitations on Immigrations and Customs Enforcement in New York.<\/p>\n
Part of that plan would ban state, local and federal law enforcement from wearing masks while interacting with the public. Violating that would be a misdemeanor charge.<\/p>\n
It would also ban the use of state, local, or school resources for immigration activity, and ban ICE from entering state or municipally owned buildings without a search warrant.<\/p>\n
A large portion of Hochul\u2019s plan is to stop state and local law enforcement from working with ICE for non-criminal charges. It would also limit law enforcement from sharing information about immigration status to ICE unless it\u2019s related to a crime.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen it comes to civil enforcement, ICE won\u2019t be able to use our jails, won\u2019t be able to use our police technology funded by our taxpayers and will not be able to use our police personnel,\u201d said Governor Hochul. \u201cI just want to be very clear on that and that is the case in many, many communities. But I just want to clarify this would be a statewide policy. So we\u2019re drawing a line in the sand.\u201c<\/p>\n
Hochul is proposing these changes in the state budget. She says there will likely be many more discussions on this going forward.<\/p>\n
