Since opening in 1933, Farrell\u2019s in Windsor Terrace has become more than just a neighborhood watering hole \u2014 it\u2019s a community institution. Now, a documentary years in the making aims to capture its legacy.<\/p>\n

The making of the film was delayed by the pandemic but is back on track<\/p>\n
“It’s just everybody here cares about you, nobody is here out to get you,” said Mike O’Donnell, a bartender at Farrell’s for 30 years who also loves his a two-block commute to work.\u00a0<\/p>\n
It was almost seven years ago when NY1 visited the legendary watering hole to talk about a film in the works called “Why Farrell’s?”\u00a0<\/p>\n
Brooklyn natives Jason Cusato and Rob Martin are behind it, telling the story of the community meeting place and legends like longtime owner, the late Eddie Farrell, and bartender and owner Jimmy “Hoolie” Houlihan, who passed away in 2022. But then, COVID arrived.<\/p>\n
“It was moving forward and then it was like hitting a brick wall with COVID and everything like that. And it really just stopped the momentum,” said Cusato.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The film is now back on track. It features interviews with bartenders, customers, and notables like the late journalist and writer Pete Hamill, who was a patron. The team was able to make some progress during the pandemic.\u00a0<\/p>\n
“We spent the time editing. What can we do during this time where we can’t shoot and with no money. But we did our best to get a rough cut of the movie,” said Martin.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Next month, the filmmakers will be screening it for folks involved in the film and potential investors to hopefully help move it forward.<\/p>\n
“We want to make sure we tell the story the right way, we want to make sure that we honor not only the community, but the bar itself,” said Cusato.\u00a0<\/p>\n
