Speaking in an interview with NBC News<\/a>\u2019 Meet the Press to mark his first 100 days in office, Mamdani emphasized the importance of maintaining a functional connection with the federal government. \u201cHe\u2019s the president of the United States of America. I\u2019m the mayor of New York City, and we know that so much of what the city needs is also dependent on a relationship with the federal administration,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n Mamdani suggested that their shared ties to New York City have helped shape their interactions. \u201cNew York City holds a very special place for him as well as for me. We\u2019re both from the same city,\u201d he noted. He added that their discussions often go beyond formalities, touching on detailed local issues. \u201cOur conversations are not just of the scale that is typical with the president, but also granular about even the things as specific as zoning law changes in midtown Manhattan,\u201d Mamdani said.<\/p>\n Despite what the NYC Mayor described as productive engagement, Trump had a spat over policy. Donald Trump recently criticized a proposed pied-\u00e0-terre tax targeting high-value properties owned by non-residents. In a Truth Social post<\/a>, he wrote, \u201cSadly, Mayor Mamdani is DESTROYING New York! It has no chance! The United States of America should not contribute to its failure. It will only get WORSE. The TAX, TAX, TAX Policies are SO WRONG.\u201d<\/p>\n Zohran Mamdani responded by reaffirming his vision for the city. \u201cThe president and I both want this city to succeed. This is how you do it,\u201d he said.
