PROSPECT HEIGHTS \u2014\u00a0As Maria Monge guided 15 young adults from across the Diocese of Brooklyn through the Co-Cathedral of St. Joseph<\/a> on April 18, she made sure to highlight the many works of art that filled the ceiling.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cThrough art, you can find truth\u00a0\u2014\u00a0and that truth is God,\u201d said Monge, the coordinator of parish communications and outreach at the co-cathedral.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Monge hosted the walking tour of the co-cathedral on behalf of the Diocese of Brooklyn\u2019s Youth and Young Adult Ministry.\u00a0The\u00a0day\u2019s\u00a0journey,\u00a0which began at the co-cathedral and ended\u00a0with Mass at\u00a0St. Francis of Assisi-St. Blaise Parish\u00a0in Prospect\u00a0Lefferts Gardens\u00a0was\u00a0intended\u00a0to\u00a0teach\u00a0the young adults about the history of\u00a0the\u00a0parishes.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Abigail Castro, a parishioner at Ascension Parish in Elmhurst, said she has heard beautiful stories about the parishes in Brooklyn and\u00a0participated\u00a0in the walking tour to learn more.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was\u00a0very beautiful. When I walked in\u00a0(to the co-cathedral), I felt a peace and something that was very welcoming, without being said,\u201d Castro\u00a0said. \u201cWalking into the church and seeing the different images of Mother Mary from different countries \u2014 it was\u00a0very beautiful.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never seen this in other churches.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Beginning outside the co-cathedral before making their way inside\u00a0\u2014 where they took in the many colorful murals lining the cathedral\u2019s ceiling as tourists snapped pictures \u2014\u00a0the\u00a0young adults learned about the\u00a0history of the cathedral,\u00a0which\u00a0was built in 1912 and\u00a0can\u00a0hold\u00a0over 1,000 parishioners.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

They also\u00a0found out\u00a0about\u00a0the symbolism behind\u00a0the bronze statue of St. Joseph\u00a0at\u00a0the entrance\u00a0(St. Joseph teaches Jesus how to hammer while holding the nail \u2014 representing his trust in God),\u00a0the\u00a0artwork throughout\u00a0the co-cathedral\u00a0(including 20 images of the Blessed Mother\u00a0from around the world),\u00a0the emblems of the\u00a0bishops who have led the diocese, and the American saints depicted above the\u00a0church\u00a0entrance.\u00a0<\/p>\n

After\u00a0touring the co-cathedral, the group made\u00a0its\u00a0way to St. Francis of Assisi-St. Blaise \u2014 with rosaries in hand and praying the Sacred Mysteries along the way \u2014 where Father James\u00a0Kuroly, the diocese\u2019s director of youth and young adult ministry, celebrated Mass, which marked the ongoing Franciscan Jubilee<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cI think, especially for the young adults, they wonder, \u2018Where am I in the church?\u2019 They can feel alone,\u201d Father\u00a0Kuroly\u00a0said. \u201cBut something like this, a simple gesture of walking, is symbolic to them, and shows they are not alone.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Luceros\u00a0Manzanares, associate director for\u00a0the diocese\u2019s\u00a0Youth and Young Adult Ministry,\u00a0said this\u00a0was\u00a0the second walking tour\u00a0they\u00a0hosted,\u00a0explaining they are\u00a0meant to foster community while\u00a0showcasing\u00a0the beauty of parishes around the diocese.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
