A 12-year-old Sands Point student will join young performers from across the United States and abroad on stage at Carnegie Hall this month as part of a national youth theater ensemble performing with The New York Pops at its 43rd Birthday Gala.<\/p>\n

Tara Rajan, a seventh-grader, has been cast in the Camp Broadway Ensemble<\/a>, which will perform alongside The New York Pops at the Monday, April 27, concert in the Stern Auditorium \/ Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall. The gala will celebrate composer Stephen Schwartz, known for works including \u201cWicked.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rajan\u2019s mother, Preethi Rajan, said her daughter\u2019s path to the stage began early.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s always been musical. She was singing before she was talking,\u201d Preethi Rajan said. \u201cShe fell into musical theater in Port Washington at about five or six and just kept asking for more.\u201d<\/p>\n

Tara began performing in local productions, including an early role in \u201cLes Mis\u00e9rables, \u201d before expanding into summer programs in New York City. At age 8, she participated in a professional showcase that led to representation by an agent and manager.<\/p>\n

Since then, she has performed in regional theater productions, cabarets, commercials, and Off-Broadway work at venues including Paper Mill Playhouse.<\/p>\n

According to her mother, the Camp Broadway opportunity came through her voice coach and marks a new level of performance experience.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is an entirely new experience for her,\u201d Preethi Rajan said. \u201cShe\u2019s worked in ensembles before, but this is at the level of Carnegie Hall with mostly musicians. It\u2019s a different flavor.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Camp Broadway Ensemble brings together 60 performers ages 12 to 17 from 15 U.S. states and international locations including Indonesia and the United Kingdom. The group will rehearse in a three-day vocal program led by Music Director Christine Riley and attend a dance master class taught by Alicia Albright, dance captain for \u201cWicked\u201d on Broadway.<\/p>\n

The ensemble will be directed by Theo Lencicki.<\/p>\n

The New York Pops Music Director Steven Reineke will lead the orchestra during the gala performance.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis partnership is always a highlight at our annual gala concert,\u201d said Anne Swanson, president and executive director of The New York Pops, in a statement. \u201cWe bring together students from throughout the country and the world to celebrate the power of live music with our orchestra.\u201d<\/p>\n

Rajan\u2019s mother said the performing arts environment in their Long Island community has played a significant role in her daughter\u2019s development, citing local studios and music programs that encouraged her growth.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe\u2019s been very involved in music training and multiple instruments,\u201d Preethi Rajan said. \u201cThe community has been incredibly supportive of her musical growth.\u201d<\/p>\n
