1.\u00a0NYSCOPBA to Hochul: State prisons in ‘systemic emergency’ amid surge in violence, contraband<\/a><\/p>\n

The New York state Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent Association (NYSCOPBA) in a letter to Gov. Kathy Hochul Monday declared that the state Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) is in a full-scale \u201csystemic emergency\u201d following a surge in violence, contraband, staff assaults and deaths inside prisons, among other issues.<\/p>\n

Starting Monday, drivers on Interstate 81 in Broome County will see right lane closures for the next several months between exits 16 and 21.<\/p>\n

The New York state Legislature on Monday passed a fifth state budget extension \u2014 now nearly three weeks past the budget’s deadline\u00a0\u2014 which was sent to Gov. Kathy Hochul for her signature. The extender runs through Wednesday and funds Medicaid, payroll, schools and other essential expenses.<\/p>\n
