Recalling Queen Elizabeth II\u2019s youthful promise of a lifetime of
\nduty and service, and that of making \u201cthe world of tomorrow a
\nbetter and happier place\u201d was the central focus of King
\nCharles\u2019s remembrances of his late mother on the eve of what would
\nhave been her 100th birthday.<\/p>\n

In a video message filmed at the library of Balmoral Castle, the
\nlate queen\u2019s beloved Scottish bolthole, King Charles spoke to the
\nCommonwealth about his \u2018beloved mother\u2019 and the
\n\u2018blessings of her memory\u2019 four years after her death. He
\nwas flanked by two portraits of his mother: one of Queen Elizabeth
\nII as a child and one in her later years.<\/p>\n

\u201cQueen Elizabeth\u2019s \u2018promise with destiny kept\u2019 shaped the
\nworld around her and touched the lives of countless people across
\nour nation, the Commonwealth and beyond,\u201d the King said.<\/p>\n

\u201cHer near-century was one of remarkable change and yet,
\nthrough each passing decade, through every transformation, she
\nremained constant, steadfast and wholly devoted to the people she
\nserved.\u201d<\/p>\n

On her 21st birthday in
\n1947<\/a>, then-Princess Elizabeth spoke to the Commonwealth from
\nSouth Africa, pledging that her whole life, \u201cwhether it be long
\nor short, shall be devoted to your service and the service of our
\ngreat imperial family to which we all belong.\u201d<\/p>\n

As her eldest son reflected: \u201cMuch about the times we now
\nlive in I suspect may have troubled her deeply, but I take heart
\nfrom her belief that goodness will always prevail and that a
\nbrighter dawn is never far from the horizon.\u201d<\/p>\n

The King also
\nrecalled Queen Elizabeth II\u2019s first-ever
\npublic broadcast<\/a>, recorded at Windsor Castle in 1940 amidst the
\nSecond World War, how she spoke to the children of the world and
\nsaid that they all had a part to play \u201cto make the world of
\ntomorrow a better and happier place.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, encouraging the world, \u201cyoung or old, and
\nwhatever our differences,\u201d to follow the late queen\u2019s lead and
\n\u201cstrive together towards a \u2018better, happier tomorrow\u2019 \u2014 one
\nrooted in peace, justice, prosperity and security.\u201d<\/p>\n

The King also spoke of Queen Elizabeth II\u2019s connection to people
\naround the world and the many ways to remember the late queen,
\nincluding at \u201cmoments of national significance\u201d or
\n\u201cfor a fleeting personal encounter, a smile, a kind word that
\nlifted spirits\u201d or for \u201cthat marvellous twinkle of the eye
\nwhen sharing a marmalade sandwich with Paddington Bear in the final
\nmonths of her life.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the closing moment of his speech, King Charles reaffirmed his
\nown accession vow of service and duty. In September 2022,
\nin an address to the Commonwealth<\/a>, the King said: \u201cI too
\nnow solemnly pledge myself, throughout the remaining time God
\ngrants me, to uphold the constitutional principles at the heart of
\nour nation\u2026 I shall endeavour to serve you with loyalty, respect
\nand love, as I have throughout my life.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then, ever the dutiful son, he spoke directly to his mother.
\n\u201cGod bless you, darling Mama; you remain forever in our hearts
