{"id":204237,"date":"2026-04-21T02:35:53","date_gmt":"2026-04-21T02:35:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/204237\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T02:35:53","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T02:35:53","slug":"brooklyn-charter-students-learn-about-financial-literacy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/204237\/","title":{"rendered":"Brooklyn charter students learn about financial literacy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Patrick Oseni teaches financial literacy at Uncommon Excellence Boys Middle School, a charter school in Bedford-Stuyvesant.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s super important to teach these kids in middle school about how to budget, how to save, how to spend, how to invest at this early age,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Next school year, the state will require all middle and high schoolers to learn about personal finance, though the regulation stops short of requiring a standalone class like the one Oseni teaches.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>What You Need To Know<\/p>\n<p>Across the state, financial literacy instruction will be required in middle and high schools next year<\/p>\n<p>Some schools are already doing it, like Uncommon Excellence Boys Middle School, a charter school<br \/>\n<br \/>Students there heard from a successful business owner who pitched her company on &#8220;Shark Tank&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>This week, his students got to hear from an entrepreneur \u2014 Michelle Jimenez-Meggiato, the co-founder of a frozen food company called Incredifulls.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe most important thing that I&#8217;ve learned from this journey, is that it&#8217;s really, really hard \u2014 but it\u2019s so worth it,\u201d she told them.<\/p>\n<p>Her business, which she founded with her husband, began with pizza cupcakes they sold at Smorgasburg in Brooklyn. Eventually, they successfully pitched their company on the reality show &#8220;Shark Tank.&#8221; Students closely watched a clip of her tough negotiation on the show.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wish that I had this subject growing up because, you know, you turn 18, you have no idea about credit cards,\u201d she said. \u201cYou have no idea how to build up your credit, especially for kids who are trying to finance and put themselves through college.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Students shared their own business ideas with her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI need like two hundred to three hundred thousand to start my business,\u201d Chase Duran told the class.<\/p>\n<p>He pitched a wireless universal charger for everything from phones to cars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI felt kind of nervous because I know that the feedback would be critical. I know that my idea isn&#8217;t fully possible until the future, when the technology comes up to par.
