{"id":204320,"date":"2026-04-21T04:23:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-21T04:23:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/204320\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T04:23:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T04:23:07","slug":"mta-workers-park-all-over-sidewalks-outside-astoria-facility","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/204320\/","title":{"rendered":"MTA Workers Park All Over Sidewalks Outside Astoria Facility"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Public transit for thee, but not for me.<\/p>\n<p>MTA workers are illegally parking on sidewalks outside a transit complex in Astoria \u2014 with some leaving MTA-branded high-visibility vests on their dashboards, seemingly to avoid tickets. <\/p>\n<p>Streetsblog counted 26 cars illegally parked outside the building on April 17.<\/p>\n<p>The rampant illegal parking in the area dates back to at least November 2020, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/maps.app.goo.gl\/6eTqe6A9v4qzmRta6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">Google Street View<\/a>. One section of the sidewalk near a fire hydrant has actually started crumbling from the constant strain of the multi-ton cars sitting where they should not:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"5712\" height=\"3218\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/IMG_0564-e1776464124995.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-589551\"\/>A sidewalk where MTA workers often illegally park is crumbling. Photo: Max White<\/p>\n<p>The cars have racked up thousands of dollars in traffic violations. One Honda with a vest on its dashboard parked on the sidewalk on 31st Street had more than $8,300 in fines, including for two bus lane violations, nine speeding violations and 128 parking violations, according to city ticket data posted on <a href=\"https:\/\/howsmydrivingny.nyc\/c9lnbkr8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">How\u2019s My Driving NY<\/a>. The owner of a Toyota Highlander <a href=\"https:\/\/howsmydrivingny.nyc\/qeif9kt6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">had<\/a> 33 speed camera violations and two bus lane violations going back to 2018.<\/p>\n<p>MTA workers often use hi-vis vests on the dashboard to avoid parking tickets, taking advantage of the NYPD\u2019s deference to illegal parking by municipal employees, who usually identify themselves with government-issued parking placards.<\/p>\n<p>A group of watchful citizens has been documenting illegal placard abuse for more than 10 years under the Twitter account <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/placardabuse\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">@placardabuse<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The group wrote in an <a href=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/2026\/01\/30\/ten-years-of-placard-abuse-the-criminal-practice-that-mamdani-must-end\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">article<\/a> for Streetsblog in January that, in theory, placard holders \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/codelibrary.amlegal.com\/codes\/newyorkcity\/latest\/NYCrules\/0-0-0-63770\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">may only use<\/a> their permits in authorized areas and for specific reasons related to their employment.\u201d But, in practice, \u201cplacarded drivers park <a href=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/2022\/08\/22\/the-ultimate-placard-census-downtown-is-choked-with-and-endangered-by-city-state-federal-workers-cars\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">wherever and whenever they desire<\/a>, regardless of whether they\u2019re performing their official job duties.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, the Department of Investigation found that there were more than 100,000 parking placards <a href=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/2025\/11\/20\/agenda-2026-mamdani-must-reduce-digitize-parking-placards#:~:text=The%20DOI%20report%20found%20there%20were%20a%20whopping%20100%2C814%20placards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">in circulation<\/a> between the Department of Education, DOT and NYPD.<\/p>\n<p>However, the NYPD is often loath to enforce the law <a href=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/2025\/11\/25\/exclusive-nypd-rejects-ending-self-enforcement-scandal-at-precinct-houses\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">when it comes to illegal parking<\/a>; in fact, police precincts are some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/2026\/04\/09\/thursdays-headlines-march-parking-madness-trophy-ceremony-edition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">worst offenders<\/a> of illegal parking. The problem has reached such a fevered pitch that a growing number of community boards want DOT to <a href=\"https:\/\/nyc.streetsblog.org\/2026\/04\/13\/parking-enforcement-from-nypd-to-dot-traffic-safety\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">take over parking enforcement<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnforcement is not meeting the needs of our city\u2019s population,\u201d said Jason Froimowitz, a member of Manhattan Community Board 6. \u201cWe\u2019re constantly trying to work around the fact that there\u2019s a lack of enforcement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Asked about the illegal parking outside the MTA\u2019s, a rep for the agency told Streetsblog that all New Yorkers are required to follow the law and rules of the road and that workers found to violate the law are \u201csubject to discipline.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A local tipster sent Streetsblog photos from the location that included several vehicles with FDNY placards. An NYPD spokesperson who did not provide a name told Streetsblog that personnel from the 114th Precinct \u201care in contact with the MTA facility management.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The police spokesperson said the department received \u201conly\u201d 26 complaints of illegal parking in the facility\u2019s vicinity since 2020, and issued 67 parking summonses.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Public transit for thee, but not for me.
