{"id":204372,"date":"2026-04-21T05:35:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-21T05:35:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/204372\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T05:35:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T05:35:07","slug":"mike-browns-odd-decision-sparked-phantom-knicks-timeout-drama-after-broadcast-error","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/204372\/","title":{"rendered":"Mike Brown&#8217;s odd decision sparked phantom Knicks timeout drama after broadcast error"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A timeout had Knicks fans furious because they believed the team didn\u2019t use one in the closing seconds of the game.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The only problem was that there was never any timeout left for Knicks coach Mike Brown to use, despite the NBC broadcast incorrectly saying they still had one left at Madison Square Garden on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The Knicks <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/20\/sports\/knicks-collapse-in-stunning-game-2-loss-to-let-hawks-even-series\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">lost Game 2 107-106 to the Hawks<\/a>, with the series now tied at one game apiece.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The confusing piece of information changed the way supporters looked at the final play of the game after Josh Hart grabbed the rebound off a missed Hawks free throw and quickly moved the ball up the court to Mikal Bridges, who missed a potential game-winning shot at the buzzer.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The NBC broadcast team said the Knicks still had one timeout left and the scorebug showed one remaining.\u00a0The phantom timeout was mistakenly added to the scorebug with 5.6 seconds left after C.J. X @barstoolsports<\/p>\n<p>What appeared to come into play was the fact that the NBA limits teams to two timeouts with less than three minutes to go. <\/p>\n<p>Brown oddly called one with 2:43 left on the clock with Jalen Brunson already driving into the lane and then used a second one with 10 seconds left in the game.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA couple of possessions weren\u2019t fluid,\u201d Brown said postgame of the timeout at 2:43. \u201cSo I wanted to make sure that we had something we wanted to get to, or to set something up offensively. because we had whiffed on the last couple possessions. It just didn\u2019t look right, it didn\u2019t feel right.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The whole situation led to people jumping on social media to express their confusion after figuring out that the timeout didn\u2019t actually exist.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI deleted my tweet about the Knicks not taking a timeout because\u2026 evidently they didn\u2019t have one???\u201d Fox Sports\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/getnickwright\/status\/2046426677891211306\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Nick Wright wrote on X<\/a>. \u201cThe broadcast said they did, and the score bug (after initially saying they didn\u2019t have one) said they did, but it appears that was all incorrect. That makes a lot more sense.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI didn\u2019t love not taking the timeout there as the broadcast said they had one, but turns out they didn\u2019t, so makes sense why they didn\u2019t. Charles Wenzelberg \/ New York Post<\/p>\n<p>Brown <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/sny_knicks\/status\/2046428153485107473\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">told reporters after the game<\/a> that it would have been a \u201cgut feel\u201d if he would have used a timeout on that final possession, if he had one.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI thought it was a good shot.
