MOTT HAVEN, the Bronx (PIX11) \u2014 Four days after a grandfather who was sitting outside in a courtyard was struck by a stray bullet<\/a>, which took his life, the family of Edgar Spence spoke out.<\/p>\n They called on both authorities and neighbors to do more to bring whoever is behind the fatal shooting to justice. Meanwhile, the NYPD said it\u2019s aggressively pursuing the killer or killers.<\/p>\n More Local News <\/a><\/p>\n On Monday morning, in the courtyard of the Mitchel Houses public housing complex, where Spence, 78, was killed, one of his sons, Michael Reid, joined community activists to call for justice.<\/p>\n \u201cOur father, our grandfather, and our children\u2019s great-grandfather didn\u2019t deserve this,\u201d Reid said about the loss of the family patriarch.<\/p>\n Spence had been in the courtyard at around 11 p.m. on Thursday, as he often was on pleasant evenings, when shots rang out after a group of young people got into some kind of dispute, according to Spence\u2019s family members.<\/p>\n The gunfire resulted in Spence being struck in the abdomen by a bullet. He was pronounced dead at nearby Lincoln Hospital.<\/p>\n Stay connected with community stories that matter: Visit our homepage <\/a><\/p>\n In the days since the shooting, a memorial of flowers, balloons, candles, and other mementos is at the place where Edgar Spence suffered his mortal\u00a0loss. Still, his family and local activists are not necessarily pleased.<\/p>\n \u201cThe balloons, the candles, that\u2019s amazing,\u201d said Reid, his son, \u201cbut someone that probably put a balloon there probably knew who did this.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cSnitching is a bad word,\u201d Reid continued, \u201cbut tell,\u201d he said, urging people to come forward with information. \u201cChange the word to \u2018tell.’\u201d<\/p>\n Reid and his fellow family members, who\u2019d come to the late morning news conference, said that they were pleased with one of the main reasons it had been called in the first place: a reward, announced by community activist Rev. Kevin McCall.<\/p>\n \u201cI\u2019m putting up a $5,000 reward,\u201d McCall announced, \u201cfor any information leading to the arrest and conviction.\u201d<\/p>\n For more on what\u2019s happening in your area, head to our homepage <\/a><\/p>\n He said that he\u2019s doing all he can to get information about the crime that has deeply impacted a family and their community.<\/p>\n Reid said that he\u2019d come from his home in Richmond, Virginia, to his father\u2019s home in the\u00a0South Bronx to try and ensure that the city was paying adequate attention to the case.<\/p>\n He said that aspects of the\u00a0investigation were lacking.<\/p>\n \u201cThe mayor\u2019s office,\u201d he said,\u00a0\u201cHe hasn\u2019t said anything.\u201d<\/p>\n For its part, the\u00a0city said, through\u00a0an NYPD spokesperson, that they\u2019re on the trail of the suspects.<\/p>\n Investigators, the department said, have been doing an \u201cextensive surveillance canvass throughout the neighborhood to access footage\u00a0and piece together the events of evening, [doing] extensive social media monitoring, [and] sending the Crimestoppers\u00a0van to the general vicinity of the area to help generate tips.\u201d<\/p>\n
