{"id":205149,"date":"2026-04-21T20:19:11","date_gmt":"2026-04-21T20:19:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/205149\/"},"modified":"2026-04-21T20:19:11","modified_gmt":"2026-04-21T20:19:11","slug":"23-long-island-schools-flunk-state-standards-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/205149\/","title":{"rendered":"23 Long Island schools flunk state standards: report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Nearly two dozen Long Island schools are flunking state standards, according to a fresh New York Education Department review.<\/p>\n<p>Two particularly flailing local schools \u2014 one in Hempstead and the other in Riverhead \u2014 landed among the bottom 5% in the state, the Department of Education found, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsday.com\/long-island\/education\/long-island-schools-needs-improvement-nys-k4ihisb8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">according to Newsday.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The state determination involves numerous factors, including student attendance, high-school graduation rates, grades and the performance of the schools\u2019 English language learners.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.61514196;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39153366\" width=\"953\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/www-google-com-local-place-126109186.jpg\" alt=\"David Paterson Elementary School.\" class=\"wp-image-39153366\"  \/>The David Paterson Elementary School in Hempstead landed on the list because of attendance issues caused by migrant crackdowns, its district superintendent said.<\/p>\n<p>New York education officials said their annual review found that 23 schools in 16 districts on Long Island needed improvement. <\/p>\n<p>The number of schools on the latest needs-improvement list went down from the 29 schools during the previous school year. But it was a higher than the 11 on the list two years ago, Newsday reported.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Overall, there are 124 districts in Nassau and Suffolk counties. Districts with the unenviable distinction of landing on the list must submit improvement plans to the state.<\/p>\n<p>Leaders of districts with schools on the list argued that their designation involved a small group of English language learners.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis designation does not reflect our students\u2019 academic abilities as a whole, and we are proud of the progress made by our students in this subgroup as well as our staff and their continued dedication to making continuous strides in instruction,\u201d Rocky Point School District Superintendent Scott O\u2019Brien told Newsday.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"39153369\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/126109169.jpg\" alt=\"A student writing on paper with a pencil. \" class=\"wp-image-39153369\"  \/>Schools in 16 Long Island districts were cited as needing improvement in the state report.  sebra \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>West Islip Union Free School District chief Paul Romanelli derided the state\u2019s report as \u201cflawed\u201d and stressed that his district\u2019s English language learners saw a jump in grades by high school. \u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe feel that our program is a strong one,\u201d he told the newspaper. \u201cBy the time that they graduate our high school, they\u2019re achieving high school diplomas.
