Ribeiro for NY Daily New <\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">In Northeast Queens, incumbent Republican <a href=\"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/district-19\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Vickie Paladino<\/a> faces a competitive challenge from Democrat <a href=\"https:\/\/www.benchou4ny.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Ben Chou<\/a>, a 34-year-old firefighter.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">The district, which includes College Point, Whitestone, and parts of North Flushing, flipped red in 2021 when Paladino won on a pro-police, anti-illegal immigration platform. A vocal supporter of President Donald Trump, Paladino has become known for her fiery rhetoric, including calling mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani a &#8220;radical leftist&#8221; who should be &#8220;deported.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/06f2ba3bb425de7e69ff558d1aa41693.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-v-0dea8073=\"\"\/>  <\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Chou is running as a community-focused alternative, emphasizing affordability, safety, and local services.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;This is going to be a test of the enduring appeal of a MAGA presentation,&#8221; said David Birdsell, PhD, provost at Kean University. &#8220;To a certain extent, it nationalizes what is otherwise a highly local race.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/gettyimages-2222299932.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-v-0dea8073=\"\"\/> <\/p>\n<p data-v-0dea8073=\"\">NEW YORK, NEW YORK &#8211; JUNE 26: Council Member Justin Brannan speaks during a press conference at City Hall on June 26, 2025 in New York City. Santiago\/Getty Images) <\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">In Brooklyn\u2019s District 47, which covers Bay Ridge and Coney Island, the race is wide open as Democratic Councilmember Justin Brannan hits his term limit.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">His former chief counsel, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kaylaforcouncil.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kayla Santosuosso,<\/a> is running to succeed him, while Republican <a href=\"https:\/\/georgeforchangenyc.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">George Sarantopoulo<\/a> is hoping to flip the seat. Republicans are betting on energy from mayoral candidate Curtis Sliwa, who has a campaign office in Bay Ridge and a loyal local following.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;Just judging by the amount of party support they have, Kayla may have the advantage,&#8221; said Micah Rasmussen, a political science professor at Rider University.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Bay Ridge hasn\u2019t elected a Republican to the Council in more than two decades, but shifting lines, including the addition of Coney Island in 2023, have made the district more competitive.<\/p>\n<p>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/439013217AA9E41BFFE2133AF2CA9050.jpg\" alt=\"Politics Unusual: Brooklyn Borough President Reynoso, Former City Council Minority Leader Borelli\" class=\"sr-only\" data-v-7a5d4fdb=\"\"\/>   <\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Santosuosso, who has lived in Bay Ridge since 2013, co-owned a neighborhood bar with her husband and has been active in local organizing. Fluent in Arabic, she\u2019s courting the area\u2019s growing Arab American community, a group that could be key if Mamdani\u2019s campaign helps boost turnout.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">In the Bronx\u2019s District 13, covering Pelham Parkway, Pelham Bay, Throggs Neck, and City Island, incumbent <a href=\"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/district-13\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Kristy Marmorato<\/a> is seeking re-election after becoming the borough\u2019s first Republican Councilmember in two decades.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Running as a moderate, Marmorato faces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.shirleyaldebolforcouncil.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Democrat Shirley Aldebol<\/a>, a union-backed candidate with support from 32BJ SEIU, which is also endorsing Mamdani.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;Having the support of organizations who are going to drive out votes is huge,&#8221; Rasmussen said. &#8220;The SEIU is a powerful union with a lot of members who work the streets.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>  <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/alicia-vaichunas.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-v-0dea8073=\"\"\/>  <\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">In Central Queens, covering Maspeth, Middle Village, and parts of Ridgewood, outgoing <a href=\"https:\/\/council.nyc.gov\/district-30\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Councilmember Bob Holden<\/a> leaves behind a district that defies easy political labels. The multiparty Maspeth native has won elections on Democratic, Republican, and Conservative lines, and both candidates vying to replace him are his own staffers.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Republican<a href=\"https:\/\/aliciavfornyc.com\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> Alicia Vaichunas<\/a>, Holden\u2019s deputy chief of staff, and Democrat Phil Wong, his budget director, both say they\u2019re proud of their boss&#8217; legacy and even pledged to hire each other if they win.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Wong, a former Republican, calls himself a &#8220;conservative Democrat&#8221; and has opposed affirmative action and the city\u2019s noncitizen voting law. Vaichunas, a lifelong GOP member and former PTA president, has built a reputation as a fierce advocate for seniors, veterans, and children with special education needs.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Their race underscores how Holden\u2019s crossover appeal has blurred party lines in a part of Queens where personal politics often matter more than partisan ones.<\/p>\n<p original-article-post=\"\" origination_station=\"WNYW\" data-v-ec26887a=\"\" data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Big picture view:<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">Together, these races could determine how much influence MAGA-aligned Republicans, and moderates like Holden\u2019s allies, retain in city politics.<\/p>\n<p data-v-6fc2855c=\"\">&#8220;They could be a block of votes the Democrats need from time to time,&#8221; Rasmussen explained. &#8220;The mayor could need them, or the opposite side on City Council could need them.
