Two passenger planes averted disaster when they were forced to abort their landings after nearly colliding \u2014 coming less than 400 feet of each other as they approached the tarmac at John F. Kennedy International Airport Monday afternoon.<\/p>\n

The American Airlines- and Air Canada-manned flights neared the runway and glided dangerously close, within 350 feet of each other, Flightradar24 data shows.<\/p>\n

Republic Airways Flight 4464 \u201cperformed a go-around\u201d and deviated off its \u201cintended approach path\u201d just after 2:30 p.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration. <\/p>\n

The jet veered straight into Jazz Aviation Flight 554\u2019s route while it was preparing to land, coming less than a football field\u2019s length away from the aircraft.<\/p>\n

The American Airlines plane descended roughly 600 feet while soaring over Long Island. Flight Radar<\/p>\n

Flightradar24\u2019s tracker<\/a> showed the Republic aircraft suddenly dropped roughly 600 feet in mere seconds while flying over Long Beach.<\/p>\n

At the same time, the Jazz plane shot up nearly 1,000 feet, according to the tracker<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The FAA said both flight crews properly responded to onboard alerts, effectively averting a disaster in the skies.<\/p>\n

Republic Airways, which was operating the service for American Airlines, said the crew \u201creceived a resolution advisory\u201d \u2014 an anti-collision announcement dispatched by the aircraft\u2019s Traffic Collision Avoidance System. <\/p>\n

The Air Canada flight ascended a staggering 1,000 feet at the same time. Flight Radar<\/p>\n

The warning is considered the most serious pilots can receive and typically orders them to either climb or descend to avoid a rapidly approaching threat.<\/p>\n

Jazz Aviation, the regional airline flying for Air Canada, said the crew received a \u201ctraffic warning notification and resolution\u201d on top of speedy directions from the air traffic controllers. <\/p>\n

Both planes landed without incident shortly before 3 p.m.<\/p>\n
