A 72-year-old woman was killed and two others were injured, including the driver, after a car crashed into a bus stop bench in Co-op City Tuesday afternoon, police said.<\/p>\n
The crash happened just after 1:30 p.m. on Bartow Avenue, where investigators say the driver of a red car plowed into a bench where people were sitting and waiting for a bus.<\/p>\n
By the time first responders arrived, the woman was already dead.<\/p>\n
Police have identified the victim as Ramonita Colon.<\/p>\n
A 36-year-old man who was sitting on the bench and a 55-year-old man who was inside the vehicle were both taken to a hospital in stable condition, according to police.<\/p>\n
Neighbors described a chaotic and emotional scene in the aftermath.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe are grieving, sir\u2026 we are grieving,\u201d one person said.<\/p>\n
Hillary Morrison, who said she frequently waits at the same bus stop, stood across the street in disbelief.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe wait at the bus stop all the time\u2026 and when I heard what happened, I said, \u2018Oh God\u2019\u2026 I said, \u2018Lord, thank you, I wasn’t there,\u2019\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Another neighbor said they saw victims being pulled from the wreckage.<\/p>\n
\u201cI come over here and I see people pulled out,\u201d the person said.<\/p>\n
The NYPD\u2019s Collision Investigation Squad is investigating what led to the crash.
