1.\u00a0Trump’s lawyers ask New York appeals court to toss hush money conviction<\/a><\/p>\n

President Donald Trump\u2019s lawyers have asked a New York state appeals court to toss out his hush money criminal conviction, saying federal law preempts state law and there was no intent to commit a crime.<\/p>\n

The lawyers filed their written arguments with the state’s mid-level appeals court just before midnight Monday.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0Jamaica rezoning plan looks to clear the last hurdle<\/a><\/p>\n

The full City Council is expected to vote on the Jamaica rezoning plan Wednesday.\u00a0If it passes, it would go into effect almost immediately.<\/p>\n

The plan covers 230 blocks and touts the creation of 12,000 new homes, including around 4,000 affordable units. It also includes boosted commercial space for businesses, upgrades to transit, streets and sidewalks, and the creation of two new plazas in downtown Jamaica.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0NYC sees first major drop in opioid overdose deaths in a decade, officials say<\/a><\/p>\n

For the first time in nearly a decade, New York City has recorded a significant decline in opioid overdose deaths, according to newly released city data.<\/p>\n

Mayor Eric Adams and Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Acting Commissioner Dr. Michelle Morse announced today that overdose deaths dropped sharply in 2024, with 2,192 deaths reported \u2014 down from 3,056 in 2023.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0Jackson Heights voters concerned about quality-of-life issues<\/a><\/p>\n

Ahead of the mayoral election, officials and residents in Jackson Heights, Queens pointed to a range of quality-of-life issues that they want the next mayor to address, including\u00a0a lack of public parks, ongoing prostitution concerns and vendor issues.<\/p>\n

Jackson Heights is known for its diverse population, with more than 150 languages being spoken in the neighborhood alone.<\/p>\n

5.\u00a0N.Y. extreme weather events, disaster response costs rise over recent years, state comptroller report says<\/a><\/p>\n

The frequency of severe weather events in New York state is growing, meaning disaster response costs have risen over the last three decades or so, according to\u00a0a new report\u00a0released today by state Comptroller Tom DiNapoli\u2019s office.<\/p>\n

The report said since 1998, federal assistance to New York for declared disasters and emergencies has averaged $958.6 million in aid annually. While actual annual amounts are variable based on the severity of weather events, the aid provided captures only a portion of the full cost of the damages.<\/p>\n

6.\u00a0Three governors, 23 attorneys general sue Trump administration over SNAP benefits funding<\/a><\/p>\n

A coalition of states, including New York, sued the Trump administration today for what they say is an unlawful suspension of the U.S. Department of Agriculture\u2019s Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Plan benefits.<\/p>\n
