<\/p>\nNEW YORK (WABC) — Next year’s New York City schools calendar is out and classes will start later than usual for the 2026-2027 school year.<\/p>\n
The first day of school will be Sept. 10, which pushes the last day of school to Monday, June 28, 2027.<\/p>\n
School typically starts the Thursday after Labor Day, and because September starts on a Tuesday, this year’s first day of school comes late in the calendar.<\/p>\n
By law, the city is required to hold 180 instructional days.<\/p>\n
Some other calendar changes include Election Day as a remote day for students rather than a day off.<\/p>\n
Also, class will be in session the Monday after Easter and spring break will run from April 22 to April 30, covering all of Passover.<\/p>\n

New holidays added to the calendar in recent years wont be days off for students. Diwali falls on a weekend, Lunar New Year falls during the February mid-winter recess and Juneteenth is on a Saturday.<\/p>\n
Mayor Zohran Mamdani said the city takes its responsibility to parents “very seriously,” but that the calendar is the result of negotiations of the United Federation of Teachers, among other unions, who have traditionally been resistant to starting the school year before Labor Day.<\/p>\n
