{"id":206228,"date":"2026-04-22T17:34:06","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T17:34:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/206228\/"},"modified":"2026-04-22T17:34:06","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T17:34:06","slug":"council-member-arrested-over-deed-theft-fight-in-brooklyn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/206228\/","title":{"rendered":"Council Member Arrested Over Deed Theft Fight In Brooklyn"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>BROOKLYN, NY\u2014 Police arrested City Council Member Chi Oss\u00e9 while he attempted to block the eviction of a constituent fighting to keep her longtime family home, according to officials and witnesses.<\/p>\n<p>Oss\u00e9 was taken into custody as he stood outside the Jefferson Avenue property of Carmella Charrington, whose ownership of the four-story brownstone has been contested for more than two years.<\/p>\n<p>Officers forced Chi Oss\u00e9 to the ground during the arrest as he attempted to block the eviction, according to a video <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/OsseChi\/status\/2046953267280670926\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">posted on X<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>Charrington remains jailed on Rikers Island after a judge held her in contempt of court in connection with the dispute. <\/p>\n<p>Her family says the legal battle has left her unable to defend her claim to the home her relatives have owned for decades.<\/p>\n<p>Supporters, including neighbors and activists, gathered outside the property as authorities moved to enforce the eviction. <\/p>\n<p>Oss\u00e9 joined them and attempted to intervene.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the result of deed theft and the ongoing displacement of Black homeowners in Bed-Stuy,\u201d Oss\u00e9 wrote in a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/OsseChi\/status\/2046953267280670926\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">statement<\/a> posted to his social media account. \u201cOur office is closely monitoring this situation and will provide updates as this develops.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The dispute centers on the property in the 200 block of Jefferson Avenue, where Charrington\u2019s family says they have lived for more than 60 years. A developer, 227 Group LLC, has sought control of the deed.<\/p>\n<p>More than a year ago, the developer attempted to change the locks on the home, an incident captured on surveillance video that Charrington later used in court filings, according to her family.<\/p>\n<p>Despite the ongoing legal fight, relatives and supporters have remained at the home in an effort to prevent removal.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities have not released additional details about the charges related to Oss\u00e9\u2019s arrest.
