A Brooklyn councilmember was forcefully detained and arrested by the NYPD on Wednesday amid a protest of a slated eviction against one of his constituents.<\/p>\n
Councilmember Chi Oss\u00e9<\/a>, who represents Bedford-Stuyvesant and part of Crown Heights, was taken into custody by police \u201cwhile defending his constituent, Carmella Charrington, from eviction after six decades in her home,\u201d according to a statement from his office.<\/p>\n In a video shared by Oss\u00e9\u2019s office, the councilman is seen in a confrontation with two officers in front of a home in Bed-Stuy. As the officers grapple with Oss\u00e9, he can be heard saying, \u201cGet off of me.\u201d The pair of officers then can be seen pushing Oss\u00e9 down on the ground as one begins to place him in handcuffs while kneeling on the councilman\u2019s back. As Oss\u00e9\u2019 is taken away, the assembled crowd can be heard screaming, \u201cWhat are you doing?\u201d and \u201cShame!\u201d<\/p>\n Council Member Chi Oss\u00e9 was just arrested while defending his constituent, Carmella Charrington, from eviction. Our office is closely monitoring this situation and will provide updates\u2026 pic.twitter.com\/MsLF97Tkju<\/a><\/p>\n \u2014 Chi Oss\u00e9 (@OsseChi) April 22, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n Oss\u00e9\u2019s staff confirmed the councilmember\u2019s arrest in a statement, saying that he\u2019s being held at the 79th Precinct in Brooklyn. \u201cBlack displacement is happening right now in Bed-Stuy and Carmella is one of many Black homeowners battling deed theft in Brooklyn,\u201d the statement read. \u201cFor months, our office has pushed for an eviction moratorium for homeowners facing deed theft. These protections are the bare minimum, and families cannot wait any longer. Not another Black homeowner should have their home stolen. Until deed theft ends, we will fight every single day.\u201d<\/p>\n City Council Speaker Julie Menin<\/a> weighed in on social media<\/a>, describing the videos of Oss\u00e9\u2019s arrest as \u201cconcerning.\u201d In a subsequent post, she said she has spoken to Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch<\/a> as well as traveled to the 79th Precinct, where she met with Oss\u00e9. \u201cWe are told he will be released shortly,\u201d she said<\/a>.<\/p>\n Shortly after, Oss\u00e9 was released from custody. The councilman said four other people who were arrested alongside him are still in custody and he urged other eelcted officials, including Mayor Zohran Mamdani<\/a> to help push for their release.<\/p>\n Mamdani had not seen video of Oss\u00e9\u2019s arrest when asked about it at an unrelated press conference<\/a> on Wednesday. But he called the incident described by reporters as \u201cincredibly concerning\u201d and said his office would follow up.<\/p>\n \u201cI know he\u2019s been on the front lines of fighting deed theft.
