78-year-old grandfather<\/a> at NYCHA\u2019s Mitchel Houses in the Mott Haven section of The Bronx on Thursday, April 16, while he was also apparently sitting on a bench at the time he was shot.<\/p>\n\u00a0<\/p>\n
An NYPD spokesperson said that at around 1.31 p.m., officers responded to a 911 call regarding a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of Bartow Avenue and Co-Op City Boulevard, within the confines of the 45th Precinct.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cFurther investigation by the NYPD Highway District\u2019s Collision Investigation Squad determined a 55-year-old male, operating a 2018 Mazda CX5, was traveling northbound on Co-Op City Boulevard when they suffered an apparent medical episode,\u201d the spokesperson said. \u201cThe Mazda mounted the sidewalk on the northeast corner of Bartow Avenue and struck a 72-year-old female and 38-year-old male who were both sitting on a bench.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
The spokesperson said the 72-year-old female was pinned underneath the vehicle, sustained severe trauma throughout her body, and was pronounced deceased on scene. \u201c[A] 38-year-old male pedestrian and 55-year-old male operator were transported by EMS to NYC Health + Hospitals\/Jacobi in stable condition,\u201d the spokesperson added. \u201cThere are no arrests at this time, and the investigation remains ongoing by the NYPD Highway District\u2019s Collision Investigation Squad.\u201d<\/p>\n
The deceased has been identified as Ramonita Colon from the Wakefield section of The Bronx.<\/p>\n

Councilman Kevin Riley (C.D. 12) issued a statement on Tuesday, writing that he was deeply saddened to learn of what he described as a tragic incident resulting in the death of a 72-year-old grandmother in Co-op City, and which left two others injured, including a driver.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cMy heart is with her loved ones as they grieve this unimaginable loss,\u201d Riley said. \u201cI am wishing strength and a full recovery to those who were injured. It is especially heartbreaking to learn that this incident was the result of a sudden medical emergency. This was an unexpected and devastating situation that reminds us how quickly life can change.\u201d<\/p>\n

He added, \u201cI am grateful to our first responders for their swift and compassionate response. As the investigation continues, my office is closely monitoring the situation and stands ready to support any residents who may be impacted.
