The New York state Legislature on Wednesday passed a sixth state budget extender \u2014 now three weeks past the budget’s deadline\u00a0\u2014 which was prompty signed into law by Gov. Kathy Hochul.<\/p>\n

The extender runs through Monday, April 27 and funds essential expenses. The budget was due April 1.<\/p>\n

Major differences between Hochul and the Democrat-led Legislature over the her proposal to reform the state\u2019s car insurance laws<\/a> in an effort to lower rates and dial back the 2019 climate law<\/a> remain key sticking points, as well as differences over raising taxes on the wealthy, school aid, Tier 6 pension reform<\/a> and Hochul\u2019s measure to create a 25-foot protest buffer around places of worship.<\/p>\n

Last Thursday, Hochul also\u00a0revamped her proposal<\/a> for an immigrant protection package, expanding limitations on how state and local law enforcement can interact with U.S.\u00a0Immigration and Customs Enforcement \u2014 but raising concerns among progressives over exceptions when there is probable cause around certain crimes.<\/p>\n
