YWL \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>Peeing in parks, walkways, roadways and on the sides of buildings is, unfortunately, hotly hip among New Yorkers this year, as law enforcement has received a staggering 316 complaints of public urination thus far in 2026,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/assets\/nypd\/downloads\/pdf\/qteam_data\/qteam-statistics\/qs-en-us-CITYWIDE.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">per an April 12 report<\/a>\u00a0from the NYPD Quality of Life Division. The number of indecent infractions is up from 214 during the same period last year \u2014 a sizable 47.7% increase.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The exact number of summonses police have issued in response to the misdeed isn\u2019t known.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The troubling figures echo the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/12\/13\/us-news\/public-urination-boozing-other-nyc-quality-of-life-complaints-are-surging-and-will-get-worse-under-mamdani-critics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">recent influx of quality-of-life gripes<\/a>\u00a0pertaining to drug use, excessive noise, double parking, disorderly conduct, and, of course, public urination.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The report revealed a 47.7% uptick in public peeing complaints over the last year. NYPD Quality of Life Division<\/p>\n<p>When nature calls,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/04\/04\/us-news\/boozy-homeless-honeymooners-have-sex-on-street-inmamdanis-beloved-astoria-cops-cant-stop-them\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">city slickers are unashamedly answering<\/a>\u00a0in nature \u2014 even with public restroom resources such as\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.got2gonyc.com\/about\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">the Got2GoNYC map<\/a>,\u00a0launched\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2022\/04\/01\/nycs-best-free-public-bathrooms-according-to-tiktok\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">by Teddy Siegel in 2022<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As an answer to the problem, Mayor Zohran Mamdani vowed to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/01\/10\/us-news\/mamdanis-4-m-plan-for-providing-desperate-new-yorkers-relief-self-cleaning-public-bathrooms\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">roll out a $4 million citywide program\u00a0<\/a>to install up to 30 \u201cself-cleaning\u201d modular public bathrooms in January.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, previous plans to erect inexpensive, quick-to-install public potties around town \u2014 including a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/03\/18\/us-news\/so-called-cheap-and-easy-to-build-3-5m-toilets-for-nyc-park-are-4-years-behind-schedule-and-counting\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$3.5 million rest station<\/a>\u00a0in Manhattan\u2019s Fort Washington Park \u2014 have been stuck in purgatory for years due to design changes and legal reviews.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately for folks who can\u2019t \u2014 or just don\u2019t want to \u2014 hold it, the city has deemed public urination a non-criminal \u201cpetty offense,\u201d punishable by a $50 fine, according to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ww2.nycourts.gov\/COURTS\/nyc\/criminal\/specialprojects.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\">New York State Unified Court System<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Law enforcement may begin cracking down on public urination violators. Andriy Blokhin \u2013 stock.adobe.com<\/p>\n<p>Officials, however, fear that the pittance of a penalty is not enough to keep pee-pee off the streets.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Republican Assemblyman Alec Brook-Krasny of Brooklyn recently <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nysenate.gov\/legislation\/bills\/2025\/A4861\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">issued\u00a0a bill<\/a> in the state legislature demanding that outdoor urinators \u2014 and defecators \u2014 be ordered to pay a $500 fee.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the event that a\u00a0violator\u00a0fails\u00a0to\u00a0answer\u00a0such\u00a0notice\u00a0of violation within the time provided \u2026 [they] shall become liable for additional penalties,\u201d\u00a0reads the bill, in part. \u201cThe additional penalties shall not exceed $450 for each violation.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"They put the pee-pee in the Big Apple.
