{"id":20658,"date":"2025-10-29T01:39:12","date_gmt":"2025-10-29T01:39:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/20658\/"},"modified":"2025-10-29T01:39:12","modified_gmt":"2025-10-29T01:39:12","slug":"nyc-ordering-noise-meters-at-construction-sites-to-soothe-ears","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/20658\/","title":{"rendered":"NYC ordering noise meters at construction sites to soothe ears"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s music to their ears.<\/p>\n<p>City regulators are making a bid to address the bane of New Yorkers\u2019 existence: noise!<\/p>\n<p>The city Department of Environmental Protection will require <a href=\"https:\/\/rules.cityofnewyork.us\/rule\/noise-monitoring-rules\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">major construction projects <\/a>that operate \u201cafter hours\u201d to <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/15\/us-news\/nycs-hidden-noise-cameras-issue-1-7m-in-fines\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">install noise meters<\/a> in an effort to bring down the racket to reasonable levels.<\/p>\n<p>The new rule would cover construction sites of at least 200,000 square feet that border residential areas.<\/p>\n<p><img style=\"aspect-ratio:1.49926794;display:block\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-modal-image=\"37512814\" width=\"885\" height=\"590\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/2025-new-york-city-trump-112650134.jpg\" alt=\"Construction site for the Second Avenue Subway in New York City with an excavator and workers.\" class=\"wp-image-37512814\"  \/>Construction workers at the site for the Second Avenue Subway in Manhattan on Oct. 2, 2025. Santiago\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The city <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/01\/07\/lifestyle\/the-number-one-reason-new-yorkers-called-311-last-year\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">received more than 700,000 311 noise complaints<\/a> of all kinds last year, top of any category of gripe in the Big Apple.<\/p>\n<p>The DEP said it received more than 20,000 complaints just for \u201cafter hours\u201d construction noise in 2023, such as jack-hammering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis rule would require the party responsible for a construction site to perform noise monitoring,\u201d the DEP said of the proposed amendment to monitor the decibel levels.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis data would inform whether additional mitigation strategies are needed, or whether the hours that the work is permitted should be reduced or changed. Photo by Spencer Platt\/Getty Images<\/p>\n<p>The noise monitoring rule was soothing to the ears of one Brooklyn lawmaker who complained about rattling racket from construction projects in his district, including the building of a new borough jail.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a great idea! This is a brilliant proposal from DEP,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2025\/09\/15\/us-news\/nycs-hidden-noise-cameras-issue-1-7m-in-fines\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Councilman Lincoln Restler<\/a>, whose construction hotspot 33rd District includes Downtown Brooklyn, Greenpoint, Williamsburg, Brooklyn Heights, DUMBO, Boerum Hill, Vinegar Hill, Bedford-Stuyvesant and the Brooklyn Navy Yard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe responsibility should be on the developer to monitor noise levels and ensure they are not causing extreme disturbances for neighbors,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\tStart your day with all you need to know\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p class=\"inline-module__cta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\tMorning Report delivers the latest news, videos, photos and more.\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\tThanks for signing up!\n\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p>Cracking down on noise is part of the DEP\u2019s 2025 long-range vision plan, a spokesman said, adding that no specific set of complaints prompted it.<\/p>\n<p>If the data shows elevated noise levels at certain times of day or night, the DEP will dispatch inspectors to construction sites to get responsible contractors to address it, the agency rep added.<\/p>\n<p>DEP also is working to develop new technology to better monitor and enforce the noise code to respect residents\u2019 ear drums.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the worst ear-piercing noise comes from construction sites. Jackhammer\/power saws generate 110 decibels of noise, just below a jet takeoff at 130 decibels. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"It\u2019s music to their ears.
