But, as Reddit user FranklinBenecdict pointed out<\/a> in a r\/baseball thread, there may be one glaring, not-so-obvious explanation for the Mets\u2019 on-field troubles: the team paid tribute to Brian Wilson by playing \u201cKokomo\u201d at Citi Field last summer. \u201cI just want to say that the New York Mets are now 47-70 since playing \u2018Kokomo\u2019 on the day Brian Wilson died last June,\u201d they wrote. \u201cThe curse no one is talking about.\u201d yumyyumapollo replied, \u201cMet Sounds,\u201d and Lenn_Cicada added: \u201cGod only knows what they were thinking.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n It doesn\u2019t take a Beach Boys diehard to spot the issue here. Wilson, who passed away on June 11, 2025, was not involved in the writing or recording of \u201cKokomo.\u201d The song was co-written by Mike Love with John Phillips, Scott MacKenzie, and Terry Melcher for the Cocktail soundtrack, and went to #1 in 1988. Wilson, whose debut solo album came out four days after \u201cKokomo,\u201d wasn\u2019t present at the song\u2019s recording session and later claimed that his bandmates did not tell him about it until after the fact.\u00a0<\/p>\n However, it\u2019s unclear if the Mets\u2019 in-stadium DJ actually played \u201cKokomo\u201d during the team\u2019s June 11 game against the Washington Nationals (which New York won). According to <\/a>SportsNet\u00a0New York\u2019s Andy Martino, the Beach Boys\u2019 \u201cI Get Around\u201d was played at the top of the third inning on the day Brian Wilson died, but there was nothing said about \u201cKokomo.\u201d Athlon Sports also covered<\/a> the tribute and stayed mum about any \u201cAruba, Jamaica, ooh, I wanna take ya\u201d errors.
