\u201cIt\u2019s so cold,\u201d Maria Reyes said. \u201cYesterday was too much cold. So, I don\u2019t know if the baby has very good clothes. I don\u2019t know who\u2019s here yesterday. I left around 10 p.m., 10:30 p.m.\u201d<\/p>\n
Reyes works as a street vendor selling gifts and other items near West 44th Street and Seventh Avenue in Times Square.<\/p>\n
Shortly after she said she left for the night Tuesday, police say an emergency call led officers to the intersection where they found a 1-year-old baby girl: alone, conscious and alert.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf they can\u2019t take care of a baby, they should leave it in a hospital or take it to a precinct,\u201d Nicole Rober said.<\/p>\n
In fact, there is an NYPD substation in the heart of Times Square, just feet from where the baby was left.<\/p>\n
\u201cI can\u2019t even imagine what life is going to be like for them,\u201d Sky Faber said.<\/p>\n
Faber was also there Tuesday night, shortly before the baby was found.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are more moral ways to go about that versus just leaving them in a busy area with no protection,\u201d she said. \u201cYou don\u2019t know what\u2019s going to happen to them.\u201d<\/p>\n
Police said the infant was taken to Northwell Greenwich Village Hospital in stable condition.<\/p>\n
Regardless of what happened that led to a baby being left in Times Square. Legally, a parent can anonymously abandon a baby up to 30 days of age and without fear of prosecution if the baby is left with an appropriate person or location, like a hospital or staffed police or fire station, and someone is notified.<\/p>\n
