New York City Council member Chi Oss\u00e9 (D) was arrested on Wednesday during a protest to stop a city resident from being evicted from her home.<\/p>\n
Oss\u00e9 was later released, telling reporters outside the New York City Police Department\u2019s 79th Precinct that three men \u201cmanhandled\u201d him, The Gothamist<\/a> reported.<\/p>\n \u201cIt takes a lot to lift me off the ground, but they were able to do so,\u201d he added, according to the outlet. \u201cThey slammed me against the concrete. \u2026 My face is sore, and I do feel a little loopy and dizzy.\u201d<\/p>\n Oss\u00e9\u2019s office said in a statement<\/a> that the council member was arrested \u201cdefending his constituent, Carmella Charrington, from eviction after six decades in her home.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cBlack displacement is happening right now in Bed-Stuy and Carmella is one of many Black homeowners battling deed theft in Brooklyn,\u201d the statement reads, referring to the city\u2019s Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood.<\/p>\n \u201cFor months, our office has pushed for an eviction moratorium for homeowners facing deed theft,\u201d Oss\u00e9\u2019s office said. \u201cThese protections are the bare minimum, and families cannot wait any longer. Not another Black homeowner should have their home stolen. Until deed theft ends, we will fight every single day.\u201d<\/p>\n A New York City Police spokesperson told The Gothamist that the city sheriff\u2019s office and marshals went to the residence to issue an \u201ceviction and mental health warrant.\u201d One resident refused entry. Four people, including Oss\u00e9, were arrested.<\/p>\n Police added that Oss\u00e9 and the three others were given desk appearance tickets for allegedly obstructing government administration and disorderly conduct.<\/p>\n New York Attorney General Letitia James (D) said she was \u201cdeeply disturbed\u201d by videos circulating online of Oss\u00e9\u2019s arrest.<\/p>\n \u201cMy office is leading the fight to keep New Yorkers in their homes, and we have been in contact with the resident of this home for over a year to offer guidance and advice on her legal battle,\u201d she said in a post<\/a> on the social platform X.<\/p>\n Oss\u00e9 in mid-November sought to challenge<\/a> House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) with a long-shot congressional campaign. He failed to receive support from the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), of which he is a member. Oss\u00e9 also faced opposition from New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani (D), another DSA member, who said the focus should be on affordability.<\/p>\n Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) also opposed Oss\u00e9\u2019s attempt to challenge Jeffries, echoing Mamdani.
