Mayor Zohran Mamdani quickly served up solidarity to his Democratic Socialists of America comrade Chi Oss\u00e9<\/a> \u2014 calling out the Brooklyn councilman\u2019s \u201cconcerning\u201d arrest where he was filmed blocking authorities during an anti-eviction protest.<\/p>\n

Mamdani\u2019s show of support for Oss\u00e9 \u2013 a firebrand lefty who shares Hizzoner\u2019s social media savvy \u2013 was echoed by a slew of other city pols, including Council Speaker Julie Menin, even before cops released the councilman from custody.<\/p>\n

\u201cI have seen the concerning footage of Council Member Chi Oss\u00e9\u2019s arrest earlier today and am in touch with [NYPD] Commissioner Tisch about the nature of the arrest,\u201d Mamdani wrote on social media.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is a pleasure to work alongside Council Member Oss\u00e9, a leader in his community and a partner in building a safer and more affordable New York City. I am grateful he is out of custody.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oss\u00e9 received a desk appearance ticket on obstruction and disorderly conduct charges, while three others were arrested on the same raps, police said.<\/p>\n

He told reporters after his release that he felt \u201cdizzy\u201d after cops \u201cmanhandled\u201d and \u201cslammed\u201d him to the pavement, Politico reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI will absolutely be filing a misconduct report against the officers who slammed me on the ground,\u201d he said, according to the report.<\/p>\n

The brouhaha followed a nearly nearly two-hour standoff between roughly 30 protesters and NYPD cops helping with a legal eviction for one of Oss\u00e9\u2019s constituents in Bedford-Stuyvesant.<\/p>\n

Social media lit up with dramatic video depicting the showdown descend into chaos outside the Jefferson Avenue brownstone. Video showed Oss\u00e9 facing off against a pair of officers, who pull him down to the pavement and handcuff him on the sidewalk.<\/p>\n

\u201cWho do you protect? Who do you serve?\u201d protesters chanted as cops arrested Oss\u00e9.<\/p>\n

The NYPD said later that Oss\u00e9 was captured on body-worn camera pushing past officers who were trying to stop protesters from blocking a gate in front of the building.<\/p>\n

Oss\u00e9 and the other protesters were warned repeatedly that blocking the authorities \u2014 cops assisting city marshals carrying out an eviction \u2014 would result in their arrests.<\/p>\n

Police said Oss\u00e9 then physically resisted, \u201cappearing to flail his arms and hands to prevent officers from restraining him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Oss\u00e9\u2019s personal X account shared one video, contending his arrest came as he protected his constituent Carmella Charrington from eviction.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is the result of deed theft and the ongoing displacement of Black homeowners in Bed-Stuy,\u201d the post states.\u00a0<\/p>\n

But the deed theft accusation was less straightforward than Oss\u00e9 contended.\u00a0<\/p>\n

State Attorney General Letitia James\u2019 office investigated Charrington\u2019s claims of deed theft and concluded that, instead, it was a property dispute between heirs and relatives of the home\u2019s former co-owners, officials said.<\/p>\n

Charrington had a March 31 court hearing in which a judge asked her to produce her father, a ward of the state of Georgia and reputedly the home\u2019s owner, officials said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

She was given two weeks to bring her father to court, but failed to do so by the April 16 deadline \u2013 leading to her arrest on a civil contempt charge, according to officials.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Charrington spent five days in Rikers Island jail and was released Tuesday \u2013 one day before NYC sheriff\u2019s officers and marshals tried to evict her on a judge\u2019s order, officials said.<\/p>\n

A spokesman for 227 Group LLC, which contends to own the home, said the deed theft accusation was \u201cunequivocally false.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThis property was purchased in January 2024 by 227 Group LLC in an arm\u2019s length, all-cash transaction with title insurance, which means the property was purchased from two unrelated parties at a price they negotiated,\u201d the spokesman said in a statement.<\/p>\n

\u201cMr. Charrington owned the property with a partner, and the conveyance of his share was legally authorized by the Fulton County Probate Court in Georgia since he is the subject of a court-appointed conservatorship. The eviction of the current occupant, who has been living at the property illegally for over two years, has been deemed a lawful eviction by Kings County Housing Court and Supreme Court.\u201d<\/p>\n

The messy dispute nonetheless drew the advocacy of Oss\u00e9, who in turn received support from Mamdani, Menin and even James \u2013 who called herself \u201cdeeply disturbed\u201d by his arrest.<\/p>\n

Mamdani\u2019s quick support of Oss\u00e9 contrasted with his lengthy silence on the gang-related shooting that killed 15-year-old Queens boy Jaden Pierre<\/a>\u00a0last week.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Menin, meanwhile, rushed to the NYPD\u2019s 79th Precinct.<\/p>\n
