Joanne, Lady Gaga<\/a>\u2018s fifth album, was also one of her most personal and familial releases. It was named after Gaga\u2019s father\u2019s\u00a0sister, her aunt Joanne Germanotta,\u00a0who died from lupus at 19 years old. She never knew her aunt, who died 12 years before Gaga was born. But she always had a connection to her, from birth, since she was given \u201cJoanne\u201d as her middle name.<\/p>\n

On the album, Gaga worked with longtime collaborator and producer Mark Ronson and a line of handpicked collaborators. Those include Beck,\u00a0Father John Misty<\/a>, Hillary Lindsey<\/a>, and more, along with guest vocalists and musicians, including Sean Lennon, Florence Welch, and Este Haim.<\/p>\n

Initially, Ronson also pulled in\u00a0Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme<\/a>\u00a0to play guitar on a few tracks. Along with adding guitar to four songs, Homme\u2019s role expanded on the album when he also added drums to another track. He also co-wrote two songs, including one he also co-produced.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was just very open-minded\u2014I really appreciated that,\u201d said Homme<\/a> on working with Gaga. \u201cI also reserve the right to be surprised. I don\u2019t want to pretend that I know something; I don\u2019t really know anything. And she just really surprised me, how passionately she made music.\u201d<\/p>\n

Homme continued, \u201cThe songs were really good, too. In a sea of music where other people are writing everything for you, she was just so in there, with her sleeves rolled up. And such a huge part of her music, which I find to be necessary for to come across in a way for in the way that can connect to people.\u201d<\/p>\n

Joanne opens with \u201cDiamond Heart,\u201d a song referencing Gaga\u2019s beginnings as a go-go dancer and the hustle of odd jobs she had while trying to make it as a musician in New York City earlier in her career. The title also references the engagement ring her former fianc\u00e9, Taylor Kinney, gave her, a diamond shaped like a heart.<\/p>\n

Homme plays guitar on \u201cDiamond Heart.\u201d He also appears on \u201cA-Yo,\u201d \u201cPerfect Illusion,\u201d and the second song he co-wrote with Gaga, Ronson, and producer BloodPop: \u201cJohn Wayne.\u201d<\/p>\n

On the more Americana-swayed \u201cJohn Wayne,\u201d\u00a0Gaga\u00a0is dreaming of a \u201creal man\u201d\u2014I crave a real wild man \/ I\u2019m strung out on John Wayne\u2014like the legendary Western actor. The lyrics also allude to finding a dangerous lover.<\/p>\n

In the music video for \u201cJohn Wayne,\u201d directed by Swedish director Jonas \u00c5kerlund, who also shot Gaga\u2019s 2009 \u201cTelephone\u201d video, there are enough action-packed scenes for a John Wayne film with horse riding, flying beer cans, and a car chase. Gaga also did many of the stunts herself. <\/p>\n

\u201cI won\u2019t tell you which ones I didn\u2019t do, but I will tell you that that\u2019s me the whole time on the car, when I\u2019m on top of the car going really fast,\u201d Gaga revealed. \u201cI was in high heels, going from the trunk to the top of the car, and then flying into the front seat. My mother, she was literally screaming at me. She was like, \u2018You have to do the Super Bowl.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
