New York City<\/a>\u00a0lost more residents than those who moved in<\/a> last year, according to a new study from the Citizens\u2019 Budget Commission released Monday.<\/p>\n

The Citizens Budget Commission reported that the city\u2019s overall population declined in 2025<\/a>. <\/p>\n

The study explained further that the population decline is due to the 70% drop in New Yorkers moving to other areas<\/a> and international migration.<\/p>\n

According to the study, \u201cAcross all income levels, more people moved out of New York City<\/a> than moved in last year.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Last year, New York City lost 114,000 more residents to other US cities than it gained. <\/p>\n

Although it\u2019s an increase from 2024, it still did not surpass the pandemic-era exodus.<\/p>\n

The study also found that in 2024, New York City lost more low- and middle-income residents<\/a> than it did high-income residents<\/a>. <\/p>\n

More New Yorkers<\/a> with incomes in the bottom 40% moved out between 2023 and 2024.<\/p>\n

New York City is often criticized for its high cost of living.\u00a0Mayor Zohran Mamdani<\/a>\u00a0pledged to tackle affordability<\/a> with a government-run grocery store<\/a> and rent freezes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Fox News Digital previously reported on residents claiming Mamdani<\/a> is backtracking on\u00a0campaign promises<\/a>\u00a0to lower housing costs, pointing to a proposed property tax hike, rising water bills and higher electricity costs as signs that life is only getting more expensive.<\/p>\n

Mamdani\u2019s office did not respond to Fox News Digital\u2019s request for comment.<\/p>\n

The city\u2019s losses came after New York Gov.\u00a0Kathy Hochul\u00a0lamented the flight of wealthy tax-paying residents<\/a> to red states like Florida and Texas. <\/p>\n

Former residents have explained<\/a>\u00a0that they found a better quality and cost of living outside the Bay Area, where homelessness and housing prices have skyrocketed. \u00a0<\/p>\n
