Oss\u00e9 said that his position was not to adjudicate, but rather to ensure that the family in the center of the issue had a voice and “that the system moves toward protecting them.” In the council member’s view, others are working with a more narrow definition of what deed theft is, and that even methods used by the state that are technically legal can still be “cruel and wrong.”<\/p>\n
The incident was not deed theft, according to the attorney general’s office. <\/p>\n
An NYPD spokesperson said that marshals were issuing an “eviction mental health warrant,” and officers became involved when protesters refused entry to law enforcement. Authorities confirmed that four people, including Oss\u00e9, were arrested, charged with obstruction of government administration and disorderly conduct, and were issued a desk appearance ticket.<\/p>\n
The council member is calling on Gov. Kathy Hochul to intervene on the issue and establish an eviction moratorium, protecting homeowners from what he called a “race against time” while they undergo these legal processes.<\/p>\n
“The pattern that this case sits inside is real,” Oss\u00e9 said. “Speculators targeting heirs in Black neighborhoods, using legitimate looking paperwork to extract generational wealth from families who have lived in these homes for decades.”<\/p>\n
Oss\u00e9 said that he suffered a concussion “as a result of the NYPD shoving [him] to the pavement” during his arrest, and that he will be filing a complaint.<\/p>\n
