{"id":208177,"date":"2026-04-24T09:19:07","date_gmt":"2026-04-24T09:19:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/208177\/"},"modified":"2026-04-24T09:19:07","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T09:19:07","slug":"city-starts-work-to-extend-madison-avenue-bus-lane","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/208177\/","title":{"rendered":"City starts work to extend Madison Avenue bus lane"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Work has begun on extending the double bus lanes of Madison Avenue 19 blocks downtown, city transportation officials are expected to announce Friday, the Daily News has learned.<\/p>\n<p>The work, which is expected to take several weeks, will <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nyc.gov\/html\/dot\/downloads\/pdf\/madison-ave-e23-st-e42-st-cb6-jun2025.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">extend the existing stretch of double bus lanes<\/a> \u2014 which currently runs from E. 42nd St. to E. 60th St. \u2014 down to E. 23rd St., speeding up bus travel for nearly 40 blocks of the northbound thoroughfare.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery weekday, nearly 100,000 bus riders from all five boroughs are stuck crawling along Madison Avenue at walking speed,\u201d Transportation Commissioner Mike Flynn said in a statement. \u201cThe snail\u2019s pace of buses and the unpredictable commutes steal precious time from working New Yorkers that could otherwise be spent with their families and friends.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to DOT data, buses south of E. 42nd St. on Madison Avenue average a speed of about 4.5 mph \u2014 a little more than half the 8 mph average speed of a city bus. Roughly 55% of people traveling along the avenue are doing so on a bus, city data says.<\/p>\n<p>North of E. 42nd St., Madison Avenue currently has two bus lanes, two lanes for other motor vehicles, and one lane for curbside parking.<\/p>\n<p>South of E. 42nd St, the plan will install two bus lanes, and leave one for parking and one for other motorized traffic.<\/p>\n<p>The project, which was first pitched under the administration of former mayor Eric Adams, was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nydailynews.com\/2026\/01\/11\/mamdani-admin-jumpstarts-stalled-madison-ave-manhattan-bus-lane-project\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">among the first bus improvements announced by the Mamdani administration<\/a> at the start of the year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, we\u2019re committing that we will move forward and complete this project this year,\u201d Deputy Mayor of Operations Julia Kerson said in January. \u201cOperations is about execution.
