But if we want to protect nature, appreciation must lead us to take action, and action springs most notably from inspiration — the feeling that nature is worth protecting and exceptional people are doing that hard work. We need those stories, and film is the perfect medium for it.

From April 23-26, the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) presents its REEL WILD New York Film Festival in Manhattan for its second year — and its first as a juried festival. The festival lineup is packed with films that do more than showcase nature’s beauty; they confront the urgency of conserving it.

These films truly span the globe — from some of the most remote ecosystems on Earth to a cluster of beehives in the Bronx — reminding us that conservation is not something happening in a vague “somewhere else” but rather in very specific landscapes and seascapes that are both interconnected and deeply relevant to life here in New York.

That may surprise some people. New York is known as a capital of finance, media, and culture. But it is also, quietly and powerfully, a capital of conservation. The REEL WILD Film Festival foregrounds that identity for New York audiences.

“Keeper,” winner of the “New York’s Wildest” Award, screens today at 6 p.m. It’s a tender father-daughter story that centers on urban beekeeping in the Bronx. Shortlisted for an Academy Award, the film follows Bronx beekeeper Sean Malik Flynn and his daughter, Alaura. Despite a severe allergy to bee stings, Sean cares for hives across New York City. When a cancer diagnosis threatens his hives’ survival, he and Alaura face tough questions.

In a borough better known for density than biodiversity, “Keeper” reveals how people and wildlife intersect in unexpected ways in our city.

Moving from the local to the global, “A Life Illuminated” — which earned both Best in Fest and Best Exploration Film — captures a rare and mesmerizing subject: the giant squid, brought to life through remarkable footage from the deep ocean. Screening tomorrow at 7 p.m., the film is a reminder that even now, some of the most extraordinary species on Earth remain largely unseen — and that understanding them is essential to protecting them.

While these documentaries capture extraordinary stories of wildlife conservation, when the film cameras stop rolling a different set of wildlife cameras often continue. Across WCS field sites, camera traps — motion-activated cameras — capture wildlife around the clock, documenting rare and elusive species, revealing population trends, and providing data that critical to conservation

REEL WILD films celebrate the wonder of the natural world while also revealing the pressures it faces — from habitat loss and the changing climate to the encroachment of our human footprint on wild places. They also point toward solutions. From community-led conservation efforts to advances in science and monitoring, these stories show how progress is possible with awareness, engagement, and sustained commitment.

Wildlife films bring distant worlds into focus, connect New Yorkers to a global conservation story, and challenge us to see nature as something intertwined with our lives. If Earth Month is to mean anything, it must move us beyond appreciation to action. Come to the REEL WILD festival to be inspired by the natural world and consider what steps you can take to protect it.

Calvelli is executive vice president of public affairs at WCS (Wildlife Conservation Society) and co-founder of the REEL Wild Film Festival serving as a member of its Advisory Board.

Earth Month invites us to pause from our hectic lives to appreciate the natural world all around us.…

[8
9,56,63,65,64,299
0":"post-208218","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-new-york-city","8":"tag-new-york","9":"tag-ny","10":"tag-nyc","11":"tag-nyc-headlines","12":"tag-nyc-news","13":"tag-opinion
["GET
