UK-based drone company Skyports Drone Services<\/a> will begin a year-long cargo drone trial in New York City this month.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Skyports will fly medical supplies across the East River between Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn on behalf of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.<\/p>\n

The trial will see a small unmanned aircraft operate on a fixed route between the Downtown Skyport<\/a> in Lower Manhattan and the Brooklyn Marine Terminal, carrying light pharmaceuticals for an unnamed non-profit New York City health system.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Skyports CEO Alex Brown said the New York trial builds on the company\u2019s growing track record in drone logistics.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cAround the world, drones have proven themselves an effective tool for getting critical cargo from A to B, providing a quicker and cleaner alternative to regular road transport,\u201d Brown said. \u201cWe look forward to demonstrating their potential in New York over the next 12 months, helping to take vehicles off the road and improve the level of care provided to medical patients.\u201d<\/p>\n

Flights will run on weekdays between 9am and 5pm under the supervision of a certified drone pilot, with approval from the Federal Aviation Administration.<\/p>\n

The programme follows a two-week proof-of-concept test conducted earlier this year by Skyports, the Port Authority and the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC). During that earlier trial, the drone completed 135 flights, covered 151 miles and transported 252 pounds of dummy cargo. Each one-way crossing took an average of four minutes, compared with up to 20 minutes by vehicle. Over 95% of expected flights were reported complete.<\/p>\n

The broader aim of the trial is to assess whether drone routes could reduce vehicle traffic on congested city streets, support lower-carbon delivery and provide a viable alternative for middle-mile logistics. At the end of the 12 months, the Port Authority and Skyports will evaluate whether the service could be expanded across the region or made permanent.<\/p>\n

Skyports has been building its middle-mile credentials in other markets. Since 2023, the company has operated drone deliveries for Royal Mail in rural Scotland and, earlier this year, completed Germany\u2019s first long-range drone deliveries<\/a> to offshore wind turbines in the Baltic Sea.<\/p>\n
