{"id":208520,"date":"2026-04-24T16:57:37","date_gmt":"2026-04-24T16:57:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/208520\/"},"modified":"2026-04-24T16:57:37","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T16:57:37","slug":"belmont-fire-fueled-by-open-doors-fdny-says-nbc-new-york","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/us-ny\/208520\/","title":{"rendered":"Belmont fire fueled by open doors, FDNY says \u2013 NBC New York"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Fire officials said Friday that open doors fueled the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnewyork.com\/bronx\/fire-bronx-apartment-building\/6492806\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\"> five-alarm apartment building inferno that killed two people <\/a>and hurt nearly a dozen in the Bronx earlier this week. <\/p>\n<p>It took just three-and-a-half minutes for firefighters to arrive on scene Tuesday afternoon at the five-story residential building on East 187th Street in Belmont, between Belmont and Cambreleng avenues.<\/p>\n<p>It appeared to start in a first-floor apartment, then shot up through a stairwell, and spread to other floors. Fire officials say the door of the apartment where the fire started was left open. The front door was open. <\/p>\n<p>The exit to the roof had been open. Had those doors been closed, officials say they believe the fire would&#8217;ve been contained to that first-floor apartment, and that no lives would have been lost.<\/p>\n<p>Fire officials stressed the importance of closing doors at a Friday press conference. <\/p>\n<p>Part of the roof collapsed, sending debris falling onto the sidewalk. It took hours to get the fire under control. Rescues were effected in the front and back of the building as the fire intensified.<\/p>\n<p>People were hanging out of windows, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>The two people who died both suffered from smoke inhalation, fire officials said. Their bodies were found in different parts of the building.
